Missing Yorkie in Albuquerque I don't know if you can help or maybe someone can point me in the right direction. My brother, Kent Smithiger, passed away in September, although his body was not discovered until October. The paramedics broke through one of his french doors to recover his body. They say they didn't see a dog but his new little Yorkie would have been easy to overlook. The door was not repaired or secured prior to my arrival on 10/26. Kent lived in Tanoan, and the little female Yorkie he had was probably less than a year old. He lost his previous male Yorkie, Rye, in March of 2004 and I don't know how long he waited before he got his new puppy. He travelled a great deal internationally so I know he boarded both dogs occasionally, but I don't know who to contact. I am just heartbroken over the thought of that little girl missing. She would be all I have left of Kent. I am hoping perhaps you have heard of someone "finding" (rescuing) a Yorkie in that area of Albuquerque around that time. Or maybe you can give me an idea of where to start looking. I have checked with the mobile groomers he used and the kennel and vet but no one seems to have seen her. All of Kent's neighbors tell me they last saw Kent and the dog right around Labor Day and they think the dog's name began with a M. Any help would be appreciated. I plan to be back in Albuquerque in a few weeks to do some more work at his home and with the attorney.

Charyl~ We would love to help you and will do anything we can to help you locate this little girl. There are lots of yorkie rescue groups all over the country and I am sure there is one in that area or close by. I would call every vet office in the area and ask about new patients during that time frame. If hse was microchipped the vet might have scanned the chip and have the info for you. I would also place an ad in the local newspaper with a REWARD offered for anyone with any information about her whereabouts. There is also a regional section on this forum that you may want to check and post another thread on in case someone from that area is reading on there. If there is a yorkie club or a meet up group for yorkies in that area, that woud be worth exploring too. Go to meetup.com to see if there is one. Good luck and I hope you locate her.

Ditto, try to put in the ad or flyer that it is a remembrance of your brother , maybe that will help. Sorry about your loss... Good luck and I hope you locate her |

I live in Rio Rancho, a NW suburb of Albuquerque. I will start checking the papers. If you can email me a flyer of sorts, I'll post it in the pet stores I go to. I'll also give my vet a call as he knows a lot of Yorkie people. I'm not 100% sure where Tanoan is, but I believe it's NE, toward the mountain. If it's the neighborhood I'm thinking of, it's a gated community in a pretty high $$ area. I would think going to the neighborhood and posting signs as well as talking to as many people as possible. Possibly checking out all the pet stores/vets, etc w/ in a certain radius. If she simply 'took off', I would think she would have been nabbed by someone in a fairly close area. The area is pretty populated, so I wouldn't guess that coyotes & bears would be a concern as they are in some areas. The major newspaper here is at www.abqjournal.com I think they put the lost/found on the net and that they can be accessed for free. I'm not familiar with a yorkie rescue group here, but a major 'no kill' shelter/rescue is watermelon ranch. A good friend volunteers for them and has been checking for yorkies for over a year hoping to find one thru them, so I'm fairly certain they haven't seen her. Might there have been any paperwork regarding the pup in your brothers files - vet records, breeder bill of sale, pictures, registrations, etc. Any of those might help a bit in the search. Does the vet know where the dog might have ever been boarded? Offering a reward is good, but, in this area, from what I've seen, I'm not sure it would help. There is a family that has been offering a $1500 reward for the return of their Yorkie Male for almost 2 years, as well as another similar for a dalmation. It seems some animals just 'disappear' here. Not good. Let me know what I can do. You might also contact a local TV station. I know channel 4 - KOBTV has a very 'pet friendly' meteorologist who brings his dogs on the air at least once a week. Maybe you could elicit some help there.

Look through your brothers papers, im sure he had some sort of agreement or paperwork from the breeder, and also maybe Vet receipts or printouts (these usually have the dogs name on them, so you would at least know what her name is... how big she is,.... how old... ect) ... the others gave you good advice as well
