| Claustrophobia Is it possible for a puppy to be claustrophobic. My Gidget has a fit when I put her in her carrier for time out while I'm trying to potty train her. She whines and cries and scratches at the carrier. I just dropped her off at the groomers who placed her in a wire cage until she was ready to start her grooming. She laid down in the cage and just looked at me as if to say "it's okay--I'm okay". Is it possible that she's feeling claustrophobic in the small plastic carrier. It's the size the trainer at PetSmart said I needed. She said anything else would be too big and she didn't care for the wire cages for training. Any ideas? |

| I had the same issue. I also got the carrier that PetSmart advised me on. They said that as long as he could turn around and lie down in it, it was fine. He HATED it! We bought a huge open wire cage that he seems to like. He also rarely goes to the bathroom in it and waits for us to take him outside. There's room for some toys and a blanket, so I know he is comfortable if I have to leave for a few hours.

| I wouldn't suggest forcing a pup into any confined spaces without a proper introduction, else you'd be risking the behaviours you've described. If you're using your carrier for the purposes of transportation or other uses, I also wouldn't use it as punishment or for 'time outs' (for now anyway). By doing so, you'd be creating negative associations for the pup with the carrier. There are many ways to properly introduce a pup to a crate/carrier (would be the same for either crate or a carrier. Here's one article with some listed steps: Introducing Dog To Crate - Dogtime When done properly, you can actually train your pup to jump into the carrier on command and they'll actually like it After a proper introduction, I'd suggest to keep one or two favourite toys reserved for the pup to play with only in that carrier. When things are fun, pups are happy

YT 500 Club Member | My little one loves his plastic crate. We leave the door off the crate but it's in a soft sided play pen we call his tent. When I leave he goes in before I say anything, zip the door & he's snug as a bug in a rug. When we first got him the crate door was closed, yeah, he didn't like it. But, I rarely had to leave him closed in. Maybe your Baby does need a wee bit bigger safe place. I really recommend the soft sided play pen. Easy to fold up if you travel. Has a zip top so they can't climb out. I think I found my on e-bay for about $40.00.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | There are many dogs (and many animals), understandably, who are simply just not amenable to being confined to small spaces - and to force them into those very small spaces can be quite damaging to them, and incredibly stressful/scary for them. If crate training isn't an option for your dog, then I'd instead use an Iris Pen (this is what we used) from Amazon or Walmart. It keeps the dog confined and safe, but there is at least room to move around.
