| I have to go potty Hi, I'm new to this site. This is my first post. My Yorkie is almost 6 months. She is doing pretty good with potty training, if I keep a constant eye on her. Or watch the clock. She usually goes every 2-3 hours. If I leave it up to her. She goes in the house. We keep her in a crate when not at home, and at night. Will she just learn to let me know when she has to go? We even got bells on the front door. They're useless. What?????? |

YT 500 Club Member | For her to let you know she needs to go you need to be very president in taking her out to the same place and same door.. If it is every 3 hrs. Or so take her saying go out to potty or pee, whatever you want to call it. Always have treats to reward & lots of praise when she does something. After a while it will become a routine. It took my Ruger about 5 or 6 months to go to the same door to go pee or poop. Lots of practice & patience & a BIG aspirin & it will work. So funny with Ruger, he will go to the deck door when he has to go potty & to the front door for play or go for a walk. Remember presidency.

| A container of cheerios at the garage door (for treating and making a big fuss over) worked well for my Abby. We hung bells - but they frightened her so I put two large jingle bells on a string thumbtacked to the baseboard and taught her how to kick them to go outside- it was a process of a few weeks of training. There are youtube videos that show the steps you have to teach (I adapted them).Lots of patience! |

| Did you train her to use the bells or just put them on the door?

| My friends who use bells trained their dogs to use them by ringing them every time they took their pups outdoors. They also used keywords and phrases, "Need to go potty?" Then they rang the bells and went outside. Be sure to praise and reward with a small food treat each time she potties in the right place. Praise for ringing the bells. Always keep a basic schedule of potty breaks even when she learns to tell you that she needs to go outdoors. Don't rely 100% on her telling you needs to go. Having a basic schedule will help establish a rhythm as she matures physically and develops more control. For instance, my adult boys know that they will have a big evening walk, so they usually save their evening poop for our walk (they have piddle pads available at all times, in addition to going outdoors).

| On the bells I bought they had instructions for how to train them. I never had to do that with Joey he just started using them.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Potty training I am getting my puppy on or about july 14 can't wait. I just was in a car accident on Sat. so very glad I have time to hopefully get better. I went to visit him 2 days ago , just for a bit and he is doing well. Kinda shy at first then he came over to me. I am not doing crate training, I am getting a crate because I hear they feel secure and ordered a pen 24x24 and I am putting him in there , during the day I will leave the door open because I am home all day. Yes every 2-3 hrs I will put him on the line outside he is a small boy but sure he will be bigger when I take him home. He will be 12 weeks when I get him. Any suggestions on a waterproof mat for under doggie pen? I have posted before but never got a response. Thanks , I love this site it has taught me a lot and all of you pro's have given all of us newbies a lot of wonderful ideas. |

If you ever close the pen door make sure he can't climb out. My climbed out @ 12 weeks. If he used to going in & out on his own he won't like being closed in. Does your pen have a top? When you say putting him on a line outside I do hope it's a leash with a harness. Never put a Yorkie on a long wire outside. Good luck give him a kiss

Congratulations on your new puppy to be. I agree with the others about not putting him outside on a line. Yorkie puppies can get tangled up so easily. My Max would probably have the line around his neck in seconds if I tried that. Be sure to supervise outdoors closely. There are so many dangers to small dogs outdoors: natural predators and humans who will steal dogs right out of your yard.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I would never leave a puppy or dog outside by themselves. My grand puppy almost got attacked by a hawk , my quick reaction picked her up and brought her inside. I saw the hawk above and brought her immediately inside and about seconds later hawk did fly by. You never leave any dog outside alone unless your an idiot. Especially puppies or small dogs. I guess I will have to see how often he goes pee also. Thanks for the info. |
