| Docking tails today.....Length? What length/amount do I cut off? They are 2 days old and I understand that flour will stop any small amount of bleeding thanks Rick PS.........Lucy had 6.......yes 6 puppies. Seems like a very large litter for a yorkie |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . As a nurse and also as an interested layperson, I've never ever heard of using flour on wounds. Why would you not use styptic powder? You're amputating a *body part* here, so I would just beg you to PLEASE take these poor babies to a vet who can do it safely, cleanly, and properly. I'm very concerned that you'd come to a random online forum and trust that you'd get the proper and safe guidance here. None of us here are vets. If someone was amputating one of *your* body parts, would you be okay if they prepared by asking about it in online forums, with no practice or live guidance at all....? In this day and age, you could also just leave the tails intact rather than putting them through this amputation. One of mine has her tail intact and it's stunning.

Why would you dock the tails? My Bailey had a docked tail when I bought him and I am always envious of other Yorkies who have their full tails still. I think it adds to their cuteness/personality. I'm not an experienced person on Yorkies, so I may be in left field here when I say - imho keep them.

| PLEASE, take these babies to a vet and have this done by someone that knows that they are doing. What "surgical instrument" are you going to use, a meat cleaver, to wham down and chop these tails off???? OMG, I need a drink and it is only 10:30am.........you clearly have not even taken the time to watch some amature on YouTube chop off a living creature's tails...... Take these babies to a vet and get this done painlessly.....it will cost you some money, but hey, you can turn around and just add it onto the "cost" you are going to charge for these babies. How old are you planning on letting them get before selling them? There seemed to be a period of time when the posts on this site SEEMED to indicate perhaps people were getting more compassionate, more EDUCATED about the breed and the expenses involved in owning these dogs, let alone the expenses required to raise a litter. It seemed perhaps backyard breeders were thinning out....it seemed breeding these darlings for nothing but a quick buck was perhaps waning.....I found myself getting excited about the outside chance that we were actually able to provide PROPER education on yorkies and their care, not only their physical health but also their mental and emotional health......that perhaps people were understanding it was essential to get a MODICUM of education about breeding before throwing caution to the wind and just jumping in, devil may care attitude.......and then I am now seeing an increase in posts that clearly indicate "breeding and selling" yorkies continues to be nothing but a source of revenue for some people....do everything as cheap as you possibly can, then dump them on anyone that shows up with cash on them, and off load them quick as possible before you have to start footing bills for excellent, proper nutrition, emotional support, shots, "well puppy vet care", REQUIRED surgical procedures by someone that has a general clue what they are doing, like perhaps a VET!!!, anyway possible to nip and tuck expenses in order to hike your profit margin..... OMG!!! This is getting to be nothing but a repetitive exercise in futility.....I am sorry, but I am outta here!!!! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 04-23-2016 at 07:54 AM. |

| You know you can damage these babies for life... Take them to a vet. Do for them what you would want done for yourself..

As for length, Sasha has the shortest tail of the three I have had. It's very, very short and her hair has to be moved pretty much to find it. Seems a bit short, but that is probably just me. As for the idea that Yorkies can't "show emotion" without their tails, which I have read, Sasha wags her whole butt. Trust me, she has no problem showing she's excited.

| You people crack me up. 1 minute and snipped all 6 tails. Barely a whimper and flour has been used for ages to stop bleeding and 4 of them didn't even drop a bit of blood. Right back in with their momma and the world is just fine today. Theyre dogs and our friends........but they aint that fragile |

What length did you dock them? The AKC standard calls for medium length. I usually dock mine about 1/8 of an inch beyond where the black meets the brown on the underside of the tail. I feel that many people and vets dock the tails way to short. I would prefer the tail to be a little long than to be to short.

I also agree about preferring too long over too short, if tails are docked at all. I'm glad my boys' tails are on the longer side.

Interesting. I'm beginning to understand. Absolutely uninterested about MRSA, septicemia, or any infections that could come about what you just did. They also used to not wash hands or clean wounds. It's okay, though, as it went on for centuries. Seriously? this has to be a joke. Is that even legal to cut these off without the proper guidance of a vet or an experienced breeder? Probably not, but I sure hope there's something.

That statement tells me everything I'd ever need to know about a person and their level of respect/compassion/understanding toward other sentient beings. Newborn creatures are *always* fragile, end of story. I feel extremely sorry for any newborn creature that has fallen into your care, to be totally frank. Your flippant remark that "they ain't that fragile" is really callous and self-serving.
