| X-Pen along with crate training. We just got a 8 week old puppy last week. We decided to crate train her and that has been going well. We have also got her to stop yelping at night while she was in the living room, in her crate (no dogs in the bedroom, is the rule in our house). Anyway. Our plan was to crate her at night and when we left and supervise her when she was at home and out of the crate. Well that is becoming harder than it looks, especially as my wife has been sick and in bed since Thursday. My wife has some health issues for where this is a more common occurrence than the average person. I'm a bit worried that after her blood work Monday she might get admitted. Then I asked myself "what do I do with our new pup"? It does not help we just moved and know few people (let alone dog people) and she is not old enough and up to her shots for doggy-day-care. I hate to leave her in her crate more than I have to. I figure an x-pen might be a good option so she has more room than the crate but cannot have the run of the house and destroy it or get hurt. During housebreaking she has gone on the carpet a number of times but only on the kitchen tile once, she also went on puppy pads at the breeders, so I think she will at least go on those in the x-pen. I still plan on taking her out to potty on her normal schedule, and she will still sleep in her crate. But I think I can get more done and our puppy will have a bit more freedom in an x-pen. Also if I had to leave for the day I think the x-pen will be much better than leaving her in her crate especially as she could not hold it all day. Does anyone else use a x-pen and a crate separately? If so how do you manage it? Also do you put the crate in the x-pen or should they be two distinct places? You can definitely put the crate inside the Xpen, that's fine - or, just put a bed in there...either way is fine.

| At 8 weeks of age, our Bella could not hold her pee all night, so we kept her crate on our night stand and set the alarm for 2 AM to take her to her pee pad for a potty break. Over time, she learned to wake us up when she needed to go. We call that time the "morning woofing." As an adult, she can sleep in her crate all night without waking us up. It took us a full year to get to that point, though. I'm only mentioning this because keeping an 8 week old puppy in a crate in the living room all night when they are such a tender age *might* be a little unsafe for the dog if something goes wrong in the night. If it works for you, though, then that's fine. Our sleeping crate only has bedding in it, and is just large enough for Bella to stand up and turn around in. She finds it quite cozy for sleeping and it fits perfectly on our night stand. Other than that, the x-pen idea sounds like a good one. Be sure to have food and water available if you are away for any length of time. Last edited by pstinard; 04-18-2016 at 06:33 AM. |

At night or if we have to leave for a short period of time she will be in her crate. During the day when we cant directly supervise her she will be in the x-pen or if some issue comes up and we will be away from home longer than a couple of hours. | |

| It seems though as we make some gains some new issues come up. No more yelping in her crate and potty training is going well. But biting, chewing, and jumping are getting bad. Also she pretty much does her own thing on the leash. We have decided that while we can learn online, books, and through trial and error we will get it right eventually that having an in home personal trainer to do some 1:1 with out new puppy and us should help us find out what works best, speed things up a bit, and keep everyone on track. |
