| New Puppy Crate in Living Room We have a strong preference to not have our new (8 week old) Yorkie sleep in our room. First my wife has some medical issues that require her to occasionally be on bed rest and allowed to rest undisturbed. We don't want to get our new Yorkie used to sleeping in our room only to have to remove her later. My wife is at home during the day and if she is on bed-rest most times I work from home. Also both of us had dogs when we where younger and they never stayed in bedrooms. Hers was a Siberian Husky and mine was a collie/sheepdog/basset hound/???? mutt. Humans need personal space just as much as animals. I have stated the reasons for our decision and I'm not going to debate it. We have only had her a few days and she has wined/barked allot at night. We where really worried about bladder control and for the first couple nights got up to attend to her possibly more that we should. She is on a better potty schedule now and can easily hold it for 3 hours. This is supersizing given her age. Our vent said 3-4 hours should be good for her and in practice trying to potty her every two hours just ends up with her staring up at us wanting to play. We know she is going through a transition from being with her dog family to being in ours and I know her being alone is not her preference. Last night she cried a bit before we went to sleep. Both of us used earplugs so we could get some rest and set an alarm to potty her. After her potty I put her back in her crate and sat with her a bit. She wined for about 10 minutes then was quiet. I woke up before my alarm in the morning and she was out like a light and woke up when I cam in. Took her outside to potty and she went right away. So for those who did not put their pup in their bedroom how did you experience go when you first brought them home? How long did it take before they where comfortable sleeping through the night? What did you do to make them more comfortable sleeping in another room? We also only plan on crating at night until she is potty trained. Then she will have the run of the common areas of the house 24/7. Also more generally speaking with crating at night, do you cover the crate or leave it uncovered or something in-between? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Welcome to YT ! And, CONGRATS on your new little one, how exciting! I didn't crate train mine bc all of mine just absolutely hated the crate, so I couldn't justify that level of confinement to an animal when they clearly hated it. But...I do know some suggestions you might try...do you have a Momma-sized stuff dog for her as company...? That can be comforting to have something to snuggle with -- also, if you get one rub the stuffed dog on you and your wife so that it has your smells, which is also comforting for her. You can try pheromone sprays or plug-ins, which work great for some dogs. Can also try aromatherapy soothing sprays or balms too, to help her calm down. A timed heating pad in there may help her calm down sooner....but you want to make sure it's very protected so that she can't chew any part of the electricals! And mostly, it will just take time and patience for her to get used to being without Momma, without her mates, and also alone....those are HUGE changes for her and it's very stressing for puppies to go through this when they're used to constant company 24/7 w/ their litter. If it turns out that she just does *not* do well w/ a crate - then you may instead want to try the Iris Pen (Amazon or Walmart), which is what I used and many others here have used. It give them a little more room, and feels WAY LESS confining. It can fit a bed, pee pad, water/food, couple toys. Best of luck and keep us posted how she is doing !

| Great suggestions from Wylie's Mom. A big soft stuffed animal (careful to check for chewing though!) or maybe a soft tshirt that you or your wife have worn. My boys love my tees and sweatshirts for snuggling. 8 weeks is really young -- needs lots of potty breaks. I brought my puppy home at 13 weeks and he slept from about 11 - 12 pm to about 5 am on average.

| Oops! I forgot to indicate that I did have my puppy at my bedside in his xpen. That might be part of why he slept that long. These are the first dogs I've had who sleep in the bedroom. Our previous dogs (Airedale and cockapoo) preferred to sleep in the family room most of the time. Yorkies are often referred to as velcro dogs.

| I guess Wylies Mom said everything that is important for you! Here is how it worked for us.. I prepared a place for Chilli in kitchen that wasn't closed and it's next to my bedroom. I closed the door of bedroom and living room, he had his pillow, few toys, my t-shirt (two of them) and he liked it, i saw him sleeping on it. Also two pads in kitchen that he started using the first day he came. He was crying first two nights but just for 10 mins most. Then next day i saw him taking my socks to his place And i always leave a small light for him. He sleeps as long as i sleep, few times he was trying to wake me up but he is not doing that anymore.

| That's amazing that a 8 week old puppy can hold 3 hours! How much does she weigh right now? I crated both Scottie and Casie where they can both see my bed, so it's not really the exact same as your situation. Scottie took months before he stopped whining/barking/making noise throughout the night. Casie took one week before she was quietly sleeping through the night (either I got lucky with her or I learned through my experience with Scottie). Both of their crates are covered so that they can see me and see out the door of the crate - so basically covered on the top and two sides of the crate. I put a loud ticking clock on the top of the crates to help them sleep. I also leave chew toys in the crate for Casie so she doesn't get bored. Scottie is now 2 years old and finally reliably 99% outdoor potty trained, so he sleeps in the crate with the crate door opened; he had the rare accident here and there up to 1.5 years old. Casie is 6 months and is crated with door closed; she can hold her pee throughout the night and holds up to 5 hours during the day. She also eats her meals in her crate - it really helped her like the crate more and after a week I was able to calmly put her into the crate and she didn't make a sound (day or night).

| Three hours might be her max limit. I was a bit over last night and there was an in crate accident. I got the ebook from The Housebreaking Bible and there was a suggestion to sleep for a couple of nights with your pup in their location. It was such a simple idea I can't believe I did not think of it before especially as her crate is already beside the couch. . So I might be "in the doghouse" so to say sleeping on the couch tonight. |
