| Help. Nail cut too short I just tried to cut one of my puppy's nail and he jerked and I ended up cutting one of his nail shorter than it needed to be and he ended up bleeding.. did I permanently damage his nerves? Will he be ok? There was maybe a drop or 2 of his blood but I'm still freaking out.. He's don't bleeding after couple minutes but I'm hoping I didn't damage his paw... |

| He'll be fine. Two drops of blood should leave no permanent damage, but he may be a little fearful next time you try to cut his nails, so extra patience will be in order until he gets over that.

| He is extremely scared of me right now. I only got to his 2nd toe when I made him bleed.. I'm trying to calm cut his nail but he's too busy trying to run away... But if the nail bleeds alot.. does that mean that there can be permanner damage? |

| Did you use styptic powder to stop the bleeding? Not sure how much you cut but I've done that too with M. He's fine but still isn't happy about getting his nails trimmed. |

| he eventually let me cut the nails on his back legs, but he still was not happy with it.. by the time i got to the last one, he started to get squirmish. i just hope that he'll let me do it again later and i won't cause any kind of harm to him... i felt so bad :/ oh but.. the bleeding stopped really fast.. maybe in couple minutes... i didn't have styptic powder or anything, but when i've looked online, it said i can use baking soda or flour so that's what i've used.. but he was done bleeding before that... it was only a drop or 2 Last edited by Deviruchi; 04-03-2016 at 05:13 PM. |

| I switched nail trimmers to one with a safety plate.... only lets a certain amount of the nail get trimmed.... it's not an idiot proof safety system, but it does help lessen the likelihood of an over cut on a nail. For $8-12 it's paid for itself 10x over. It's odd, these lil guys are harder to hold to clip nails than my bigger dogs of the past were. Sounds like your pup will be just fine... based on your description. |

| I learned from my vet after I watched her trim my girls nails once. I sprinkle some baking soda in a lid before I start and if I cut too close I can dip her nail and the bleeding stops immediately. |

| I'd give him a day or two before cutting nails again. Maybe give him a little time to relax and during this time, gently rub (just for a second) or tap each of his little wheels so he's comfortable with you 'messing' with his feet. |

| If you don't have the styptic powder, flour works in an emergency. I've only made my pups bleed once, but flour stopped the bleeding quickly. I would just give him a break for a week or so and try again.

| thank you for the replies. i called the vet today and they said i don't have to worry much.. and that there shouldn't be permanent damages unless i cut it to his base of his paw.. lol :/ still feeling pretty guilty though @markfromsea, oh yeah... the one i was using had a safety plate.. he just started to wiggle alot for whatever reason and i ended up cutting a lil too short :/ @anneclaire, thank you for the tip. i've used the baking soda after googling. not sure if helped or not since he was bleeding a drop or two.. and he was done bleeding by the time i got to baking soda.. lol but i'll remember this for later (hope it just never happens again though T-T) @jkpal, he's ok with me touching his paw now. he was actually letting me touch his paw yesterday after the accident, but only if he saw that i didn't have the nail clipper in my hand.. lol i'm constantly doing *paw* command with him so he'll be ok with him giving me his paw again :/ bribing for his love at the moment with lots of treats.. lol @couversmom, i actually just went ahead and managed to cut his other nails... it wasn't fun at all since he wanted to run away, but breeder and trainer told me that if i don't do it now, he'll keep running away from me in future and i'll have a harder time doing it... :/ hope they are right. lol but thank you for the flour tip. ill make sure to remember that too |

| Been there as well. I freaked out because the blood didn't stop bleeding for over a few minutes even after applying tissue and pressure to the nail. That day onward, I bought that styptic powder for future emergencies. I also bought the smallest nail trimmer with the safety plate. The plate doesn't do much because Scottie's nails are so small. I only trim by the slivers now, but more frequently, just in case. Scottie's a big scaredy cat! Sometimes I only do one paw a day because he's so impatient and freaked out. Other days, he's so calm he falls asleep while he's 'getting his nails done'.
