| Dog walker? I just started walking my dog on a walking trail at the park. How far should we walk starting out? He was gang busters starting out. Wore out by the time we got home

| The walking trail sounds like fun! There is not one right answer to your question to fit all dogs. When my boys start losing focus and try eating things more than walking, then I know they have had enough. Some Yorkies will just slow down or sit down when they are tired. Max started with 1 mile at a time comfortably when he was a pup. Sometimes we would do 2. He usually sacks out for a bit when we return home. Teddy always has happy feet and walks around the house for a bit before settling down for a rest.

| I'll just have to see how this goes. Not sure who is more wore out. This is the third time out and we have extended it each day. Just shy of 2 miles. I do like the fact he pulls me along.

| Sounds like it is great for both of you! I like too that my boys walk me every day.

| I don't make it out every day, I do make a 3 mile walk 2-6 times a week. Our weather here in Western WA has been very wet this Winter so I did cut back. Now that the weather is starting to improve we're making it out more often. Each dog is different, he/she will let ya know if it's too far. Sometimes I'll shorten our walk because "I" feel tired. For a dog that pulls, I highly recommend a harness instead of a collar. Ya want to avoid that collapsed trachea stuff they've discussed here often in the past. Also, at least once, a overly friendly(?) dog approached very quickly, and chased my dogs through my legs and around me... and got my pups worked up so bad I felt the need to hoist my pups into the air and into my arms using the leash and harnesses. I wouldn't have been able to hoist them safely out of potential danger as quickly if they had collars only, but with the harnesses it was a very safe maneuver. I'm sure it looked like hell though. |

| I am using a harness on my boy. I can't believe the energy they have. The walk we take is a two block walk to the walking trail in the park. We won't have to get too far from home should we need to get back soon. Other dogs are my real concern

| They may be little, but are mighty. I am a runner (not as fast as in my younger days, of course, but still run). My Cali is $ pounds and 7.5 years old. Has been running and swimming laps with me since day one. She can do a 5Knwith no trouble (if the concrete if not hot, if it is, forget it). My son is military and he runs about 8-9 miles a day - when she goes out touring with him (and usually about a dozen other airmen) they say she can make about 5 - 6 miles (remember she has been doing this since 10 months old, and does agility daily) before she starts to give out, at which time he pops her in his jacket or shirt with her he's hanging out and they finish. Message here is - they are very capable of the exercise and it is good for them. Keep them hydrated and watch out for hot Tarmac! Truth is most of them could out run us Got to tell you how darling it is to see her running her little heart out with a dozen tough looking guys on the airbase

| My dogs love a good long walk. I have taken them on a 7 mile walk before and love it. They do end of getting tired but will continue to go. Once the weather gets nicer I am looking forward to those walks again. They do wear me out though.
