| FIRST visit to Yorkie Talk I live in Toronto, Ontario Canada I am looking to adopt a rescue Yorkie…or a hybrid of a Yorkie I have owned larger breed dogs for over 30 years, but want more of a smaller companion now. I would like to rescue a young adult dog. Any ideas? Finding that most shelters are not coming up with the cutie I am searching for, and perhaps your readers are more in touch with what I am hoping to find.: |

| Is there a yorkie rescue locally that you can meet? the good ones require a home visit in my area and this way, you can chat with them and ask all of your questions and once you are approved, you can be put on their waiting list. it might take some time to find the right fit, but worth waiting for |

| Welcome to YT! Good luck in your search at the rescues! It's great that you wanna adopt. I don't know about Toronto, but when I first looked in Vancouver there were very very few small dogs available for adoption (let alone a choice of a certain breed) - they always "sell" like hot cakes! I was surprised to learn how some of the States down south have so many Yorkies for adoption. But anyway, I totally agree with you that I'd want to meet the pup first too. Good luck with meeting the shorkie today Hope she/he is "the one"!!

| Welcome to YT! I am in Vancouver but originally from ON. Best of luck with your search. I too was looking to adopt a rescue and was having very little luck here in BC. I happened to come across my Morkie Monty on Kijiji and am very very happy I did. He was 8 months. The lady bought him from a pet store and put him on Kijiji the next day and was going to take him back to the pet store. I met him and .... nah I said. I don't think you are going back to that pet store you have been in and out of for 5 months. So I bought him!! I wasn't even really looking for a Yorkie especially ... a small dog that will fit on my motorcycle. So very glad to have had a Yorkie mix find me! Yay!! |

Originally, he was listed in Idaho, a week or two later they brought him over to Western Washington.. Fell in love with his photo while he was still in Idaho and I didn't know he would brought to near by.. so when they did, I jumped at the opportunity. Yorkie colored shizu type mix... He had some reservations initially but wow is he a loving dog now.. Still doesn't fetch a ball or play tug of war but he rough houses just fine with our pomeranian, they play a lot with vigor, all in fun. Anyway, hopefully petfinder has some contacts up in Canada for you to look at. The true shelter dogs in smaller towns seem to be advertised there with very reasonable adoption fees. Zippy came from one of the "rescues" and was a bit pricier. If that doesn't work, hit the web and check the smaller outlying towns animal shelters that you'd be willing to drive to.... The smaller towns have dogs and not as many people to adopt them. I found a lot in Eastern WA while I was looking, but by then, I had already seen Zippy's photo... LOL My goose was already cooked! | |

| found a Shorkie Thanks to all for your suggestions, but I was lucky to rescue a young Shorkie who has been with us 4 days. She has bonded very well with us and we are learning a new routine (people and dog), that is coming together nicely!! The 10 lb little girl was found roaming the streets (winter) and pregnant. The animal control picked her up, spayed her, and put her up for adoption. Although skittish of new people, with some TLC and time I think we can, and have, already seen improvement. She obviously had some training, and with my past experience with dogs, the corrections needed to improve her manners are very simple. All looking good!! Karen C from Toronto!: |
