| Separation anxiety and travel help I need help and advice. I have two yorkies and we planned a Disney trip and I intended to take them with us as we found a good neighbor hotel that allows well behaved pets. We recently brought them on a little mini trip and they were so badly behaved. We left the hotel room and they barked and whined nonstop. We ended up just taking them with us every place we went and took turns staying in the car with them because we could literally hear them on the first floor and our room was on the second and we didn't want to irritate other guests. This won't work with Disney. We can't take them with us or leave them in the car. So our only option is to board them. Chili has such bad separation anxiety that if I even look like I'm going to leave he starts shaking like a leaf. The thought of leaving them for 9 days breaks my heart. I know they will be so stressed and sad. They sleep in the crook of my knees and the small of my back at night and at the kennel they are alone. Has anybody left their fur babies in a kennel that long? Do you have any suggestions on how I could possibly get them to behave in the hotel room so I don't to have board them. They unfortunately aren't crate trained. Thanks in advance for your help. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If it were me, I'd hire a sitter to stay with them in their home - especially with Chili's level of anxiety. I would not risk boarding.

| Can you rent a house by Disney and have a pet sitter stay there during the day? I honestly feel for you but if might be so hard to leave for that long. Hugs!! |

| Awe...I feel so bad you and your babies. You'll both be so sad being away from each other! I agree that with their anxiety, they shouldn't be left at a kennel. It could have irreversible effects on them, where they may be more ill behaved or have elevated separation anxiety when you take them back home after your vacation. You could try crate training them now, but I'm not sure how much time you have or how effective it could be depending on their age. But even if you could get them somewhat crate trained, you'd probably want to do another test run on a mini getaway to see if they're okay being crated while travelling. On the other hand, if you don't crate them at the hotel, they'll likely have accidents if left unattended in the hotel room since it's a new place for them. Either way, I'm not sure how it could work out... Seems like the best and easiest solution would be to find a sitter (trusted friend or family) to take care of them while you're away. At least that way, you'll have somewhat of a peace of mind and can facetime /videochat them if you wanted to. My own experience.... First time I travelled, we left Scottie at a friend's place who had an older 10 yr old yorkie. It was nice that they knew how to take care of a dog, but I was still worried. After that, I started getting him used to being at my mom's house (sometimes without me there) so that by the time I travelled again the second time, he was A-okay with staying at my mom's place and I felt comfortable leaving him there while I was away.

| I always recommend socializing your dog so that when you do go away he can get boarded at a place that offers doggie day camp where they play all day and are tired by night time. My Sammy loves it. |

| Lots of great suggestions here! Another option, one I have used before, would be to find someone at your destination who could take care of your pups during the day while you are at Disney. I am not sure which Disney you are going to, but if you are headed to California, I have a great doggy day care suggestion about 15 minutes from the parks and also some individual folks who do dog walking and in-home boarding. That way they are with you for the rest of the trip, but are cared for during your longer days in the parks.

| Hi, They are socialized. The kennel we use is actually quite nice. They have a separate building for the little doggies to play together and they can go in and out of the building into a play yard as much as they like. I have left them there to play once but I've never left them there overnight. I do know it's not staffed at night. They lock the dogs in their separate kennels when staff leaves. Maybe they would be fine and I'm just being overly protective but I worry about them being alone at night and thinking we abandoned them. |

| Great, I am glad that you'll be coming to California, as I have a great suggestion for you! There is a wonderful place in Tustin, about 15 minutes from Disney called The Spaw. They do doggie day-care as well as grooming. Everything is cage free and they have a separate area for little dogs. They are off of the 5 freeway and Tustin Ranch Road (Disney is off of the 5 and Katella/Harbor, so less than 10 miles away) When my dogs go for grooming they get a couple of hours of doggie day care thrown in and they really like it there. Everyone I know loves it and I know a number of folks who leave their pups there for overnight boarding too. They have 24-hour/day supervision and you can keep on eye on your pups via their Periscope App---that way you can ensure that they are having a great time and can see them on your phone while you enjoy the parks. During the week they are open for something like 11.5 hours/day and their hours are somewhat shorter on the weekends. Full-day doggie day care covers the full 11.5 hours. They are truly lovely people! Check them out: The Spaw Just another WordPress site If this does not look like a good option, let me know and I can share some other ideas with you and can also suggest some dog-friendly restaurants near the Spaw. I can also suggest some dog-friendly places to eat in Tustin or nearby Orange---I am not as familiar with the options near Disney, but I am sure that there are a few! Overall, this is a fairly dog friendly part of the country and the weather is ideal for Yorkies, so I think that they would enjoy the trip.
