| New Yorkie Parent Needs Help! LOL We love our little Gracie. She's about 5 months old. Although we've had other dog breeds before, we've never had a Yorkie. All I can say is wow. She's great, loving, independent, fun, but oh so wild! Is this a puppy issue or a Yorkie issue? Maybe it's a Yorkie puppy issue. She has a 4x4 foot pen where we keep her while we're gone during the day. I work about 5 minutes away and come home a couple of times during the day to play with her. At night, she just goes wild. Any counsel for me? Thanks so much. I'm happy to have found this forum. |

| Hi and welcome to YT! Congrats on your baby girl . LOL "wow" is right! They are the sweetest and best little fur babies ever, and yes they are wild, and yes they will get into trouble fast and you have to watch them like a hawk. They love their "people" and they want to be around/with them, so when you come home Gracie is making up for lost time, lol. Yorkie's are a breed all of their own, I too have owned different breeds, just keep in mind you don't own Gracie, she owns you, just ask her There is a lot of great info on this site and many knowledgeable and caring people that will be happy to help you if you have specific issues or problems you need help with. Again congrats on your first yorkie little Gracie, enjoy the ride! P.S. Would love to see some pics of your baby, we all here enjoy pictures of all the babies!

| Welcome to YT, lol, yes wow is right lol, it's a yorkie thing. All my girls were like wild Indians lol. Very hyper, just filled with tons of energy and very mischievous, if you don't see or hear them, guaranteed they are getting into mischief. Puppy proof your home as you would baby proof for a 2 y/o toddler, as owning a yorkie puppy is like having a toddle around, everything goes in their mouths. They need lots of exercise to burn off some of their energy, walks are great for this. Being in a 4x4 pen all day she is sooo happy to be free and will have the crazy zoomies. Enjoy this little baby, they grow so fast. They will calm down a bit as they get older but are still mischievous little monkeys, they also LOVE to shred tissues, toilet tissue, napkins etc. so do not be surprised if this should happen. Please keep us up-dated on her silly little antics.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Yes, sounds like Gracie has classic Yorkie puppy energy! The first year is really *exciting*. Terriers tend to be energetic all of their lives, but I would say the first year is the most challenging. When my boys turned 1, they settled into a schedule of when to expect playtime, walks, and big outings. Walks help a lot, although I know the weather makes that challenging right now.

Welcome to world of Yorkie ownership. I'm 40 and have had one since age 8, so I really don't remember much of life without one of these little nuts running my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. You have her in a pretty nice size pen and I commend you for popping in to spend time with her during the day! You're going to be great at this! Terriers are high energy, but I found with all of mine, that puppy lunacy slows down a bit as they grow. She's just so overjoyed to have her family home she can't handle the joy. I don't know if she has any toys in the pen to keep her busy. Yorkie puppies like to be busy ~ just make sure it's nothing that she can actually tear up and swallow. That might help her release some energy throughout the day. When mine where pups I bought them these toys that where little tree trunks and you put stuffed squirrels in them, I believe I purchased them from Dr Fosters Smith. They have to dig out the little squirrels. I find mine like brain games like that. Also if there is a blanket, bed or pillow in her pen that she rests on, a few drops of lavender essential oil (not the perfume one, the essential oil only) helps to keep them calm. It's a soothing oil. I had one that hated it tho, so check with Gracie first lol. Lastly there will come a day when she's snoozing away next to you and you'll wonder how she grew up so fast, so enjoy her little heart running wild now. | |
