| Crazy behavior Hi I'm new to this site. I have a baby boy yorkie who is 12 weeks tomorrow. In the last few days he's been starting to chew the walls a bit. When I walk he also makes play grow noises (kind of like he is chasing my feet). How do i tame this behavior? Is this behavior normal? I'm sure he just has some pent up energy but I feel like he us starting to act out a bit. He used to very good with using his pad and now he won't. He just sneaks away and tries to pee on the carpet somewhere. Last edited by Allyp; 01-19-2016 at 06:06 PM. |

| 12 weeks is very young. Lots of puppy antics to come! Chewing the baseboards is likely because he is teething, has a need to chew something. Give him something appropriate to chew on. Finding a safe chew can be a challenge, especially for aggressive chewers, so be careful. I used Bitter Yuck spray when Max tried chewing on some furniture. It works for some dogs, but not all. For the piddle pad, limit his freedom to a smallish area with the pad close by, especially when you cannot supervise. Be sure to praise and reward when he does it right. Clean up the accident spots with an enzyme cleaner to prevent him from wanting to return to those spots.

| Thank you so much for the info! I figured it is just because he is young but I do want to make sure it is behavior that will not continue to his grown up years. Most of the time he is very precious😊 Do you have insight on the growling noises when I walk around? They are definately playful growls but it seems to becoming a more prominent thing. |

| Definitely discourage him from chewing on things he shouldn't. With Max, I always diverted him to playing with his soft toys and he still likes chewing on those. I sew our own indestructible toys from a tightly woven poly/cotton blend. For the growling, I bet he is just playing. Max did that when we played fetch. He also liked to attack my feet in the morning, nibbling at my toes. I taught him that he couldn't do that. I would say "no bite" and put him back in his pen while brushed my teeth. He learned that if he wanted his freedom, he couldn't attack my toes. Be matter of fact in your corrections, not angry. He will learn.

| Thank you very much. I always replace his chewing on things he's not supposed to with a toy but after a minute or two he drops it and goes back to whatever he was chewing before. I will make sure to keep consistently giving him a toy when he does that. |

| I'd be more concerned if a pup played silently.... the growling sounds "happy normal". Bully sticks kept our pup busy for hours at a time. What our pup really loves is when we spend the time to play with him, dragging his toys around by hand, a little tug of war, with them always receiving it as a reward. |

| Welcome to YT..I agree Maximo gave some great advise. The growling is just playing. Yorkie pups are very hyper, your baby sounds like a normal yorkie pup to me lol, nipping at feet, tell him "no biting", any unacceptable nipping or hard play biting correct with words "no biting", yorkies are very smart and catch on fast, but, you must be consistent in your corrections, reward and praise when he does as you ask.. You can try Bitter Apple on walls, molding, furniture, anything he is chewing on that he's not supposed to, it worked for 3 of my pups but, the last pup actually liked it lol. Make sure all wires (lamp, TV. stero) are not accessible to him. Confine puppy to a small area, when he is 100% pad trained then he can free roam of the house. At 12 weeks he is just a baby and cannot be expected to hit the potty pad 100% of the time. Lots of patience and consistent redirecting is needed. Enjoy these puppy days, they grow so fast.

YT 1000 Club Member | My puppies are still not at 100% at 10 months old! They do really well with the pee pad training and going outside though. It is too cold to take them out much right now so they have to use the pads more. The sounds like a puppy who wants to play. Grab a rope toy and play tug of war with him when he does that and use up some energy. I got sibling puppies so when they played at that age the sounds of growls sounded fierce. They still do actually. Mine play hard and then they crash! He is probably bored and just needs some energy used up. Tug of war, my older Yorkie taught the male puppy to play tug of war, but the girl puppy doesn't understand it. She sees the older Yorkie grab a toy and take it to the younger puppy and the younger puppy grabs the toy and they both growl and then the girl puppy sees this and she runs and tackles her brother so he will give the toy back to the older Yorkie. It is the funniest thing and the boy dogs don't understand why she disrupts their fun game of tug of war. She only tackles her brother though to give the toy back to the old man! LOL Find something he likes to do and direct him away from your feet. Mine prefer to lick my toes rather than bite them. As far as the chewing just kept re-directing and giving him something better with a firm NO if he is chewing something he shouldn't. Mine still get into stuff and chew it sometimes. Good luck and enjoy!

| Piper is generally subdued as to barking, etc., ...So when we play tug-o-war (all kinds a'shakin' goin' on) and she does her growling-thing, I'm delighted. She's the big strong wolf who is going to frighten her opponent with her big, strong I'm-not-kidding-I'm-really-getting-mad-now growls---I think antics like this are wonderful play for all! |
