petstore blues... some people are just plain stupid.... i was at the mall today and i went into the petstore with my grandma (she wanted to go in there...) and the people that were in front of the yorkie cage heard him cough and they thought it was CUTE.... i heard it and it sounded VERY familiar (toby had kennel cough when we got him) and i told the idiots (who were TOUCHING the puppy) that what they heard was not cute, it was a highly contagious disease known as kennel cough and i suggested that they wash their hands and clothing before they handled any pets that they may have at home. (LMAO.... you should have seen their faces... it was priceless.... they were scrambling for the hand sanitizer)..... as they were walking away the one lady said "i hope i dont get sick" , i guess she thought that SHE could get kennel cough what an idiot

Most people aren't "stupid" and are not "idiots." I hate hearing this being said about people who don't know a lot about dogs....or many other things, for that matter. We need to remember that we have Yorkies (and other dogs) and know more about dogs in general than a lot of people do. After all - we are on YT. Other than experience, isn't this a place where we have learned much of what we know? I would just take some situations as an opportunity to educate other people about something they don't know. My next door neighbors haven't had a dog for 20 years -- and believe me, there is a lot they don't know about dogs - especially current diseases, shots, breeding, training and all the stuff that a lot of us are very well informed about. My neighbors are well educated, productive, involved people - who constantly teach me a lot about things I'm not familiar with. Carol Jean

I understand your passion and your frustration Orinskye..I do but, I agree with Carol Jean...we have learned a lot about dogs in general from this forum and we can share our knowledge in a positive and caring way with others instead of making them feel bad or stupid for not knowing. It is ignorance, not stupidity in my opinion that makes people behave this way and we don't sound very nice when we criticize people who just don't know any better. Lets all make a vow to try and avoid the negative and emphasize the positive! I think Orinskye did that when she told the people about kennel cough because I bet she said it in a nice way. I hope the pet store yorkie gets a nice home. Luckily kennel cough is rarely fatal so I hope he is on an antibiotic precribed by the vet.

Ignorance is not always a bad thing. We're all ignorant about a lot of things - I am ignorant about a lot of things that I'm not interested in ---and I'm sure I'll die that way. I don't know anything about mountain climbing, sky diving, river rafting, making quilts, making pottery, growing orchids, tying flies, raising turkeys, buying stock futures, or soccer. And, there are thousands of things that I know nothing about. I can imagine me trying to discuss mountain climbing gear. Certainly a lot of people might call me a stupid idiot - or a nicer person might call me ignorant. Being ignorant in many regards simply means that we just aren't interested in something - and there is no reason we should be - and no reason we should know a lot about everything. I know a lot people look at pets in a pet store because they enjoy seeing them. (That's why people love to go to zoos.) Many of these people have no pets and have no reason to be very knowledgeable about raising them, training them , current diseases, necessary shots, different breeds, different sizes, different colors, etc. They have no reason to know this information. Let's just enjoy being dog nuts! We love our dogs, spoil our dogs, dress our dogs, treat them like children, read about them, go to shows, spend hours on YT, study about them, talk about them, learn more about them, and probably drive a lot of people crazy. Seems that since I got my new pup, all I talk about is my Yorkie (according to my family). All my family talks about is sports and golf (according to me). Sounds like a normal family to me! We all know a lot about some things and nothing about other things. Ignorance is not always a bad thing. Carol Jean

I don't know anything about mountain climbing, sky diving, My husband sky dives and I have no intrest but he likes to inlighten me anyway...lol I agree my friends that don'town dogs or did when they still lived with their parents know nothing! They ask me the silliest questions sometimes and I just giggle and give them the answer. They are getting more interested the more I talk about YT at coffee (they think it's cute I'm so involved with a doggie web site) I think it is important to learn as much as I can. The more stuff I learn about everything the more answers I know for trivia pursuit... he,he

YorkiesX2 -- I love your attitude. We are Yorkie nuts!!! And, it's wonderful that you understand that all your friends don't share your interest (at least not to the same extent), and that you "giggle" and share what you know. And, you know your friends aren't "stupid idiots." I am sure they have a lot of hobbies and interests that they can share with you. Carol Jean
