Should my new Yorkie weigh more? I just got her a couple days ago and I've been checking her out. I can't get her into the vet til after Xmas. Anyways, I weighed her by holding her today and she is about 5 lbs. BUT I can see her ribs and the bones at the top of her legs. Should she put some weight on? I'm concerned. She had puppies 9-10 wks ago and her appetite is good.

Is she hungry after you have fed her? I would be free feeding a momma that had just had babies 10 weeks ago....but then I free feed all my dogs.....but even if I didnt, I would be free feeding all my mommas....., mommas require special care and attention....she is probably depleted from the litter she had. She should be on special whelping food to build her back up. Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 12-22-2015 at 03:59 PM.

I have fed Royal Canin from cradle to grave for over 30 years...I would imagine you could go to a pet food store and tell them you have a momma that just delivered a litter of babies 10 weeks ago, and you want a food specifically aimed at restoring that momma to her pre pregnancy state....she needs special nutrition for at least a month, to restore her to her pre pregnancy condition. If you get a bag of Royal Canin, you can just get a small bag, and feed it until it is all gone....Mini Starter Mother and Babydog is what it is called. It is expensive, but then, that is Yorkies!!!
