Yorkie Talker | Reaction to Parvo vaccine? My little Bentley went to the vet to have his Parvo vaccine yesterday and now has diarrhea. Is this common with Yorkies? My vet seems to think that it could have caused his diarrhea, but she didn't think so and asked if I'd consider seeing a specialist since he had been in the hospital for diarrhea and vomiting in the last couple of weeks. Also, Bentley is now 17 weeks old. |

| Had to go back to read your other post to get some background... I think you said it might be food related issue? Did you change his food after you got him? Since the diarrhea/vomitting, have you had him on a bland diet? Being only 17 weeks, change of his environment is probably somewhat stressful. Have you considered going to a different vet for a 2nd opinion? Are there any other signs of sickness like not drinking/eating/etc.. |

Yorkie Talker | I changed his food after he spent 2 nights in the hospital and they put him on Royal Canine Gastro Intestinal, and they gave me two options for feeding him at home. I bought a can of each food, and he DID switch back to the Royal Canine yesterday. So that may be the problem. I've racked my brains to try to figure out what else is different. 1. The food change yesterday from one gastro intestinal to another. 2. The parvo shot. 3. I remembered a little while ago that I think he ate a small piece of mortar from our fireplace that he dug out of the floor. We moved into this older house that we are remodeling and it doesn't have a piece of trim around the fireplace and hardwood flooring. |

| When you're switching food, you MUST do it slowly. If it were me, I would give him boiled chicken/rice till his tummy settles and then slowly change him back to his regular food. Is he playing/eating/drinking fine otherwise? |

He has been playing just fine except for when he is about to have diarrhea. So far, he's only had it really bad twice. He just ate a whole serving of chicken and rice, and I'm going to hope it sits well. BTW, I'm kicking myself for the food change. I thought since he had eaten it before, he would be okay with it again.

Instead of mixing it with his regular food, I'd say just give him the chicken/rice by itself. You can also give him some canned pumpkin to firm up the diarrhea. Just make sure it's the organic/100% pumpkin. You can either get it at the local grocery or pet store. http://1w6j8040ci6b2pkd7329rcf7.wpen...n-150x1501.jpg http://www.tuckerpups.com/our_servic...p?photo_id=207

Yorkie Talker | He ate only chicken and rice for breakfast and at 3:00. The feeding in between he had a little food mixed in, but I'll stick with the chicken and rice until he's all better. I guess the good news is that he was VERY happy to eat. I was relieved to see he has a good appetite. Out of curiosity, do you mix the chicken and rice 50/50 or add more rice? |

| Sometimes, I just give chicken b/c the rice gets stuck on their hair. But when I do add rice, I tend to give less so it's more like 70/30. Make sure he gets enough fluid. Diarrhea/vomit will dehydrate and can open up a whole new can of worms. Do you have something like a first aid box for him? Not sure if you read this sticky but if you haven't, it's very informative. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...g-dosages.html |

| I have heard that the Parvo shot is pretty rough on little doggies like these.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If he was hospitalized in the last 2 weeks for illness, what on earth was that vet thinking giving him any vaccine whatsoever...??!! What a bummer it was given. It could be from the food change, could be from the stress of the shot, or some additive in the shot...who knows really. Keep a close eye and you may have to wait it out a bit.
