| Nail growing into paw pad I am very bad with nail trimming... I do the bathing and grooming and twice a year I take the boys to the vet to get their nails cut....well I decided to finally buy some nail clippers and try it on my own.... The little guys nails were fine and I just took a tiny bit off. Then I go to do the older bigger boy and when I went to clip the last little nail on his back paw I see that it is curled over and it seems to have penetrated the paw pad!!! I'm so freaked out! I tried to lift it up and it started bleeding a little... That's how I know it's penetrated the pad. Has anyone ever experienced this??? I've read about neglected dogs... But mine are bathed every other week and they get trimmed with clippers once a month... I never thought it would happen to one of mine! I'm taking him in to the vet tomorrow morning first thing (this was only discovered later tonight)... I'm so glad I bought the nail clippers and discovered this! He has shown no sign of pain. Or discomfort either... Still walking fine and playing and jumping etc... Has anyone ever been through this? I'm so worried. It seems like it might require sedation or something?? He's almost 15 and I hate to put him though this stress. Never in all of the years I've had him have I ever seen anything like this... I hope It's not serious. |

| As you can tell by my sideways avatar pic I am the worst with uploading pics to this forum...I have issues with resizing the photos otherwise I would be posting pics all the time... Esp now... It seems to be the only nail that curls under a bit..I clipped all the others and this was the last one I went to and I was shocked. . The others grow straight out... I know it's not in too deep bc of the length of the nails...but it has pierced the pad. I'm tempted to clip it myself and the pull the piece out... Like a thorn... But I'm scared for infection or if I clip more of the pad by mistake... I'm sure the vets see it quite often and I'm also sure they will most likely send him home with an antibiotic... Feeling like the worst pet owner ever!! Such an unnecessary thing to happen. |

| Typically my boss would clip it and if it is that long the quick will be long as well. So when it's cut it will bleed from the nail as well as the pad. They will clean it up and probably put him on antibiotics. It's not an ideal situation but it does happen. With all that hair it's easy to miss. You're doing the right thing by taking him to the vet and letting them clip it! Hopefully he will be good as new soon!

| After nails are clipped it takes appox 2 weeks for the quick to recede, so clipping / trimming should be done every 2 or 3 weeks, with yorkies having black nails it is very hard to see the quick, so you must be very careful. I would do a slight trim every 3 weeks to make sure the quick has receded enough.

| I was so relieved at the vets office.... I was feeling like I might lose custody due to neglect but it wasn't as bad and she didn't make me feel guilty at all. She clipped his nails and the little piece came right out and she cleaned it up and put a little bandage on and gave me some antibiotics and that was it. I was in and out in 15 mins! He didn't even cry and I have to go back in 5 days and not let the bandage get wet. I will never neglect the nails again! Thanks for the responses. She said to come back in 4 weeks after for another clipping. |

| Glad everything went well. You can put a plastic sandwich baggy on the bandaged paw, secure it lightly with tape, not to tight so it will cut off blood circulation just enough so the baggy will not slip off, this will keep the bandage dry.

| The best time to clip them is right after the bath as the nails are a little softer, it seems.

| Thanks for the advice! That's exactly what I've been doing... He's walking fine on it. I'm so glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been. |

| Thanks but I'm just too nervous to give them a good cut. For $10 I can take him into the vets office and they can do a better job. My biggest fear is that I will cut the quick and then it will traumatize him and at 14 years old I'm trying to avoid all stress. |

| Don't be hard on yourself, this happens. I had a senior cat who nails I had been clipping for over 14 years, right before he passed I took to the Vet for a wellness check up and they found one of his back paws has a nail growing into the pad. It was a case of me missing his nail during the previous clipping. It happens, but like you I now make sure I check every paw pad also when I am clipping nails.

| Thanks for the reminder to all of us. I walk my dogs quite a bit so when I checked my dogs' nails a few weeks back I was quite surprised to see how long they were under all that hair. So I trimmed all of the long hair away first so I would less likely to make a mistake while clipping our boys' nails. One still has dew claws and needs to be done on a more regular basis. Anyway, thanks for the reminder, it happens, glad it was easily remedied. |
