| Need Advise On New Puppy! Hey guys, so I just got my new puppy today, and I really need advise on crate training, every time I put him in there and leave he cries and barks. I feel really bad letting him cry even though the breeder told me to just let him cry because he has to get used to it, is this true?? Should I just leave him there for the night? Also is it okay to keep him in the other room, because even if he's in the same room and inside the crate he still cries. Thanks so much!! |

| CONGRATULATIONS yay you finally found your baby, I am soooo happy for you. I never crate trained all my now passed puppies so I have no advise on CRATE training experience, but have friends and family members that use crates. I will say this, I did have to confine my puppies at times when I was home, yes they would cry. I would let them cry and when they got quite I would let them out. If they cry, howl, yelp, bark and you let them out of the crate, they will learn crying and carrying on will get them out. So yes, let them cry, they have to get use to being confined. Let them out when they have quieted down. Being crated for them should be a good thing, when you are home have crate door open, put some treats in the crate and let the puppy enter the crate to get his treats, praise like crazy when he does this, NEVER use crate as a punishment or a time out. His crate should be his safe haven, a place he will WANT to go in when he wants to nap or hide his goodies. Now as a new puppy in a new environment, new smells and you a stranger to him he is scared, missing his mama, litter mates and human mama At night when YOU go to bed, keep his crate next to your bed, put a shirt you wore that day in his crate as it will have your scent on it, this will comfort him. If he cries at night you can reach down to his crate let him smell that you are close and he is not alone. He is but a wee little baby and scared, he needs time to adjust to his new home. What did you name your little guy, and PLEASE pictures when you are able, we all LOVE pictures.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Personally, I believe if an animal/pet hates a crate - then don't use it. They are VERY confining and can be very distressing for living creatures, for sure. All of my dogs despise the crate - so we never used one. We instead used the Iris 4-panel pen for them, which they readily accepted. You can get it on Amazon or at Walmart.

This is exactly what I think also, I mean what if it was reverse and dogs kept us locked in a cage, I know dogs think differently and all but you know what I mean. But good tip I will look into that!

Thanks, this is great advise...and yes finally I got a puppy dammit lolz, I should also mention it is a Morkie, his mom is about 6lbs (Maltese), and her Dad is about 3.5lbs (Yorkie) I did sort of survive the first night lol, he cried and cried then passed out, then woke up again cried more then passed out. Was really tough to ignore it, but gonna see what to do tonight, I just hate putting dogs let alone puppies in crates, I was also thinking of getting one of those fences for his main area instead of a crate because it has a more open space concept, what do you think? Please see attached picture, I will post some more later! Last edited by Torguy; 11-17-2015 at 04:53 AM.

| We put each of ours in a pen, sometimes called an x-pen, i think. We put their crate in there with the door open and a nice cushion so they maybe would go in there to sleep, but didn't close the door. If you are determined to crate train (and there are advantages), you could try putting him in for just a few minutes at a time.

The high pitched screeching will go on for a few days, I just went though it, it is nerve wracking to say the least. I did not pick Lacy up when she was screeching, and after several days, she quieted down a lot. Hang in there, it WILL get better very soon!!!

| I have always crated mine because I sleep better knowing they are safe and that they cannot get into anything. They do cry at first, but they get used to it. I put toys in the crate, and I would also give treats while they were in the crate. I also cover my crates. It seems they sleep better if the crate is completely covered. Since you have a small puppy, I would use an x pen with puppy pads so they can leave the crate and go to the bathroom. Once they are old enough to hold their pee all night, then I would put them in the crate. A little puppy cannot hold it all night and you will teach them to go to the bathroom in their crate, which you do not want to do. I would put them in a pen, though. This way they cannot get into something or tear something up during the night. It will also help with potty training.

Either x-pen or Iris pen is perfect. As snoopymom suggested, put his crate in the pen with a comfy cushion and always leave the door to the crate open so he can get out for food, water and wee-wee pad, there is room in these pens for food / water bowls, wee-wee pads and still room for puppy to walk around in and play. The first night is always the hardest because they miss their mama, each night it will get better I can promise you that. It is VERY hard to hear a wee lil baby crying and not want to pick them up and cuddle them, but you have to be strong and let them cry it out.

I just cannot believe it but it seems hes already crate trained!, Very intelligent little guy, now I put him in and just lay down without a peep, I do keep a nightlight on but will slowly get rid of that also when he's a little older. I will try and check out the x pen tomorrow, thanks for the advise.

Actually believe it or not he is already trained, really smart little guy, I did not budge the whole night last night when he cried like crazy, now when I put him in the crate he just sleeps away without a peep. Funny thing is that I was not at all planning on getting a dog the day I got him, I just happened to come across this breeder which I did some homework on and lives pretty far from me and just picked him up. Its amazing how the connection is just naturally there sometimes, as soon as I go to the litter of puppies, I had my eye on him and surely enough he out of them all comes over and starts to lick me lol. Also my Breeder offers Lifetime Support and Guarantee on all her puppies, including free puppy insurance from the Vet which is pretty awesome.

lol it's kinda late for me to say this, but in case down the road you feel you just MUST have a buddy for your boy. NEVER go window shopping for a puppy lol, there is NO SUCH THING AS, "I AM JUST GOING TO LOOK AT THE PUPPIES" one look in their eyes, one lil baby hops over and gives sweet little kissy to you and it's instant love lol, been there and ended up with 3 unplanned babies lol. Sounds like a good Guarantee, the pet insurance, is it with her vet? you say she lives a good distance from you, in case of emergency you need a vet that is close to you. In any case I am just happy you got your dream baby and so in love with him, that is all that matters. Did you name the little guy yet? he is just adorable. I hope you have taken him to the vet for his first check up, and have taken a fresh stool sample with you.
