| Licking! Hi I am new to this forum, I have come looking for answer, my yorkie is 13 years old and has an obsession with licking! He licks everything, the sofa, the bed, his bed, hands, faces, walls, floors, doors.. Anyway, he is especially bad for this as soon as he wakes up he will walk to the top of the bed every morning and lay back waving his paw demanding a belly rub and as soon as me or my partner go near him he is trying to lick hands, is he happy doing it? Should I be stopping him? The only problem I have is if he isn't happy and he is an old man so very drooly lol. If you help me out I really appreciate it! X |

| My mom's dog licked his paws to the point where he got cuts/sores the vet then suggested a powder you make with water that gives THE most horrible taste, down side is you taste in too and no matter what you do IT DOESN'T GO AWAY FOR HOURS!! Try looking in the mall for something that doesn't taste well and you can spray on your furniture otherwise scold him when he does it and maybe gove something he is allowed to lick? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | HI and welcome to YT ! One thing I'd explore is whether or not he has GERD - which is so easily treated w/ Pepcid. Read this: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...wallowing.html

| Oh dear! Thankfully he never really licks his paws, as I type this he is licking a pillow, this has only been a problem for a few years. To stop him I usual say "no" but he always finds a way or licks something else, if I pretend I'm going to lick him back he turns his head away lol! The only problem with a spray is I have birds and hedgehogs not sure how good it would be for them! Very interesting, I've never heard of this! He does cough sometimes but he has a collapsing throat he was born with, whenever he is too excited he starts snorting and spluttering . Thanks for replies! We are off for a walk x |

I would not under any circumstances look into the spray thing and then punish him for licking. It's either a genuine symptom of something physical -or- it's psychological -- and either way, neither of them warrant any sort of intervention that could be interpreted as punishment. (I'm not at all implying you were thinking of punishing...I'm just pointing this out bc the earlier poster seemed to view this as an option.) Have a GREAT walk !

Oh no I totally get it, I feel as if people are very quick to punish a dog, punish sounds harsh but you know what I mean! when I say no I don't say it in a stern manner I usually just move as I hate being sticky! Lol And I will certainly look into that, it wouldn't be causing him any harm? Thanks very much for the help! | |

As to the licking, I would speak with the vet and see if you can rule out any physical reasons for this licking. It almost sounds a bit OCD to me but I would rule out physical before assuming it is mental.

| I was sure I replied but it's not here lol if I do a repeat ignore this :,). But I totally get it I think people are quick to scold a dog for behavior which could have another meaning behind it, I will certainly look into it all he is cuddled up next to me after licking pillows! , it's only been a few years he has done this.. I've looked for answers before but I just thought it was a part of him! Lol, I don't say "no" in a stern way I usually just pull away since I hate being sticky! I read it could be a dominance thing? Although I think it's something else since he licks everything not just hands, he has one single big wart I was going to get that checked out so I will ask at the time thank you!. |

| Licking First, if you are new here it takes a bit longer for your posts to appear as they go through a moderator first. It will improve soon I agree with Ann that Acid reflux, GERD, could well be the reason for the licking. He seems distressed and this is his way of showing it. The GERD would be more likely to appear early in the morning when his tummy is empty and the acid disturbs his stomach. As he is older and has trachea issues too, I would consider this. My dog has GERD and if he has not eaten for a long time he can throw up bile or white foam. I give him 1/4 of a 10 milligram of Pepcid with his last small meal at night and that stops the morning issues. You might want to try this once and see how it goes. As I am not a vet I am reluctant to suggest this, but it should not do any harm. It could be other things as others have suggested so it would be wise to get a vet check him out. Hope this resolves soon and the licking stops. |

| Oh forgot to say, he never coughs anything up although I read they may swallow it before it comes out on that link so I'm thinking this could be it! He does sound like he's choking up someomthing or more clearing his throat, thanks so much for the help all! X |

Max has very sticky saliva and my dad will jokingly say, "Blah! Now I have to wash my hands." Max 'laughs' along with him. My boys are also attracted to the scent of our hand soap. Soaps, lotions, air fresheners . . . any products you use on yourself or in your home, you may want to consider if these are encouraging the licking.
