| How does one keep their sanity with a new puppy in the house? lol I have only ever had one puppy before I just got Lacy, so I have very little experience in dealing with a 3 month old pup. If anyone has any ideas of what I could do differently to make things better, (for both of us) I would sure appreciate hearing it! I have Lacy in a playpen, with her UGO potty, water, food and bed. Underneath the playpen I have a whelping pad. She pees on the UGO about 80% of the time, but she will not poop on it, which causes a real problem, because she has giardia. So, every time she poops, she walks through it and gets it on everything, and I have to wash her feet, butt, bedding, bed, UGO pad, and whelping pad. Ok, so that I can handle, as I have multiple beds, bedding and whelping pads. :-) What I am having great difficulty with, is two things. One - every time I take her into the kitchen to play, I set her down on the UGO pad, and try to play with her, but she won't play with me. I pick her up and put her on the UGO every 2 minutes, but she jumps off and pees on the floor. She does this all the time. I even use the potty training spray on the ugo pad. HOW on earth do I get her to use the UGO in the kitchen??? I finally found a treat that she likes, so for 15 minutes straight, I got a piece of dried liver treat, walked over to the UGO, and once she stood on the ugo, I praised her and gave her the treat. Second thing that I am having great difficulty with is hearing her scream ALL DAY LONG. I love this sweet little puppy so much, and all I want to do is pick her up, cuddle her and comfort her, but I know I cannot do that or she will never stop the screaming. As soon as I put here in the playpen, the screaming starts and continues for hours on end. My nerves are at the breaking point. How long will this screaming go on for? I want to buy a second puppy so Lacy will have a brother, but will never buy another one unless it is trained on the UGO, then I wouldn't be having this huge problem. If she was trained on the ugo, she would have the run of the house, and we would both be SO happy. But when she keeps pooping on the whelping pad, and pees on the kitchen floor all the time, she has to be kept in her playpen, which she and I both HATE!!! I want her to be with me, I want to enjoy each other, I want to comfort her and hold her and love her to bits. But it is not possible. Is there anything else that I can do to get her potty trained so she can have the run of the house and make us BOTH supremely HAPPY??? |

| Most puppies take some time to settle into their new homes. Max wanted to be held for the first 4 days. My dad teased me that he didn't think Max's paws would ever touch the ground. Max is a very confident dog. Coddling him those first few days didn't ruin him. I wouldn't expect a 3 month old Yorkie/Biewer pup to have run of the house and to be perfectly potty trained. It's very rare. Max was awesome with the pad, but we contained him to our primary living area, the great room, and my bedroom. Reward Lacy when she uses the UGO pad. My boys are 6 and almost 7 and we still reward and praise for good potty. When she has an accident, don't make a big deal. Just say "uh oh" and clean up. When Max was a pup, he often wanted a fresh pad to poop on. He also didn't like using a pad more than twice. We had to change pads often. Lacy's giardia may also be a factor in some way for your challenges. I wouldn't put her on the pad to play. That might confuse her.

| Thanks Kristin for the advice. I worded that sentence wrong, I do not put Lacy on the pad to play, I put her on it and as soon as she jumps off, I try to play with her. :-) |

The first year is the hardest. Max was my first puppy and I felt like I had a newborn human baby, a highly mobile one. When I got my 2nd Yorkie, I wimped out and chose an 8 month old. Now I wish that I could go back to that first year with Max and all his funny puppy antics. Hang in there.

YT 500 Club Member | Oh boy, I know you have your hands full. Have you tried potty training outside? Just keep her on a leash and only your yard till all vaccinas. Maybe that might help her distinguish outside for potty & inside for playing & giving you cuddles. I couldn't tolerate the crying for hours. My baby cried for about 2 min. & cuddled him lol. Good luck

| Patience is key with them. Keep in mind she is a baby. It is not unusual for these small terriers to take much longer to housebreak than many pups. This link may help: http://thehousebreakingbible.com/wp/ As for the screaming and the not wanting to cuddle. It may just be her personality. They are each different. I have a seven month old who screams her head off from time to time and it is ear piercing but she is my baby girl and I cannot change a lot of that. Perhaps the frequency, but she is always going to have a shrill bark and scream. It's like having children....you just never know what you are getting . sort of like chocolate I have pups who love to snuggle..others not so much. I find the boys are more cuddly usually.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Honestly, it could take weeks to get her potty trained...it does for most anyway...so it will take time, patience, determination, repetition. As for the whining, this is most likely bc she has lost her initial "family" and is going thru a major transition now, which is confusing, scary, disorienting, frustrating, and triggering. You may want to explore some calming sprays/balms and/or pheromone products like a pheromone collar or plug-in....these may help calm / soothe her quicker. Might be worth a try.

| Haha i don't think it's possible to keep ones sanity when it involves a pup heehee. I don't know about the potty training except when u see her wanna do something put her in the UGO tell her to "go potty" or whatever command you wanna use and if she tries to walk away from the UGO put her back if after 10 minutes she still does it somewhere else you should find something else to train her on. The 2nd question when my puppy stars screaming i give him a bottle that usually keeps him busy or i tell him to stop in a firm voice. After 3 mins he usually stops tho. GoodLuck with ur baby |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | My pups 5 mo old had them for 6 weeks. She is going on the pad better than he is - I got the potty training puppy apartment for him but I have her ex-pens separated so she has a potty area and a different play area - she goes thru a little gate. On his, I put the PTPA inside the ex-pen. It takes a lot of time and I have sat with them for hours at a time and try to catch them to get them to go on pad and then have a party and give a treat when they do. You have to catch the action while they are making a mistake and put them on the pad. After they do the right thing you have within just a second to have a party and give a treat. We also have one of those sound sleeper, so sometimes we turn it on low and let it be the waves, or the forest as background noise and that puts them right to sleep at night.

| I know others who use these products and I have had some success with a couple of their blends with a very high strung foster ... Creature Comforters - Welcome to the Home of Pet Blends and Genuine Bach Flower Remedies

| Piper was 3 yrs when I got her and after a year or so is JUST NOW becoming consistent in housebreaking! It does take time. Just remember that about 20-30 minutes after she drinks/eats, take her outside or to her pad; give her a couple of minutes and if nothing happens, play with her, hold her, whatever and after 10/15 minutes repeat. IFF you take her outside, it is only for 'doing her business.' No frivolity when training (i.e. running around, rolling around, etc.). Again, follow the few minutes out, time inside, then out again. As far as the crying and being held, I've heard that babies who received attention when they cried tend to be more secure and confident as adults (their cries were answered and they felt safe in knowing they would be...). Enjoy the chaos, this too shall pass---and all too quickly! Pictures, please!!! |
