| Insuance Vent (Long) This is more of a vent than anything else and how frustrating insurances can be. So most of you know that Boomer and Thumper have some scratching issues. I purchased insurance for them though Healthy Paws and took them back to the Vet after the waiting period. Well I submitted the claims for the both of them and Boomer's was denied. When I called to ask why I was told that I called them during the waiting period and mentioned I saw scratching. I don't remember stating he had allergies but that is beside the point. I said the medical records did not indicate that but they said they record all their phone conversations and note every time a customer calls and questions the policy. Thumper's claim was approved. But going forward who knows because I asked if in the future the Vet suggests allergy testing in the future would that be approved. I was told yes but who knows now that I asked the question it could be denied. I am not upset that they denied the claim I was actually expecting that. What pisses me off is that because I asked a question during the waiting period they automatically deny the claim. That means anytime I take Boomer to the Vet for itching/scratching it will be denied. Some times I really hate insurance companies both human and animal alike. Boomer is actually doing well on his medication and Benadryl. He only has dandruff that I hope with the food change will go away soon and doesn't scratch or lick as often as he did before. Thumper is the one that has more issues with scratching. He licks his paws and legs constantly still and rubs his face on my couch or blankets regularly. I didn't buy the insurance to treat allergies my purpose of buying it was actually in case of injury or god forbid a serious illness but who knows now with Boomer if they would cover anything or just say it was all related to the scratching. I just needed to write this out. I actually feel better. Sorry for the long post. |

| Actually, I'm glad you did post. I have been waffling on the idea of insurance. I've researched the internet and other animal owners. I called my vet, and they said don't waste your money. They told me to put the monthly premium in an account for Zeus. They said they have had luck with only one patient's insurance paying. They said that most of them look for a reason not to pay -- that it is worse than human insurance. This may make my decision for me. My friend's dog was denied for the same reason. She asked for the recording, and they wouldn't give it to her. Shady! |

| Seeing feel your pain! Insurance, both dogs and human variety suck! You never know if you can trust them. Perfect example my mother, who has Medicare, went to the ER after a fall. They said they needed to admit her, and I told them only if it was a regular admission not one of those prrovision admissions that the patient ends up paying for and can't get rehab afterwards -- ugly catch 22 thing. Oh, they assured me it was a regular admission -- it wasn't, they lied! Like my son says "well we can never go back there again" - but we won it, but it was ugly and only because we had an "in". So you are correct. They expend a great deal of effort to deny a claim. That being said, I have to say I have HealthynPaws, but have never had to use it. I dread the day I do need it however! I mainly got it with cancer and such in mind. You are in good and multitudes of company

I think I will start a fund of putting money in an account as well for things once I pay off all the initial costs of getting the dogs. I am someone who worries a lot and I got the insurance for peace of mind but now I don't have that because I worry if I call and ask if something is covered they will think my dog already has it or they will deny it because it could be associated with scratching. If I knew they would be documenting my phone calls I wouldn't have called and played dumb. I understand them recording calls most companies have the same policy but to actually deny a claim because of asking a question baffles me. They should deny a claim based on the medical records not me as I am not a medical professional. | |

| I am glad that I got insurance for Buster. He had only been on it for just over a month, whew past the waiting time, and was diagnosed with Luxating Patella. The paid 80% of his medical bills with the specialist which was over 4,000.00 and I had only paid in the first quarter payment. Another insurance trick you have to look out for is how they cap the maximum payment for an injury or illness. Some have a cap that is for the illness so if you use up all the funds the first year they will not cover any continuing illness. Other have a cap that resets each year so if you go over one year and the illness/injury occurs the next year you are covered. With any insurance it is best to have a nest egg because you always have to pay the Vet up front and be reimbursed by the insurance later.
