| I had pet insurance for 5 years . Of the over $10, 000.00 I spent on my 2 dogs , only $400.00 was covered. Most have a maximium they will spend and exclude alot of procedures(for instance , my male had to ahve emerg. surgery for kidney stones.... not covered. I finally decide that spending $600,00 a year was silly , when only the more inexpensive things were covered and $2000,00 was the max payout on say , cancer... Tracy |

| I searched for insurance too. I found VPI, PetCareInsurance were what most people use. But, again, all the money you put in the insurance company, you're not going to see a dime of it if your puppy's healthy and fit. I took other members' suggestions and set up a pet account where I'd put in some money every month. This way, what you put in is still yours. If they didn't use it, great! If they did, you'd have it for that "rainy day". Hope that helps! |

| I am re-posting my post from a previous thread about pet insurance In another forum I go to people said that they were not happy with their pet insurance. Many companies do not covered such things as your dog being hit by a car. They also do not pay for any illnesses that they claim are genetic/hereditary and a lot of the time if your dog or cat comes down with something the insurance company refuses to pay saying it is a pre-existing condition. Also the have caps on the amount it will pay on any illness or injury per year. So if your animals medications for something cost $500 a year the insurance may only cover $100. The thing about pet insurance is that most health problems are considered genetic/hereditary or congenital - in other words, not covered by the insurance. So if those are your biggest concerns, you might as well put the premium amount into an emergency savings account for the dog (separate from your household emergency savings account). If you're biggest concerns are accidents like sprains and strains, breaks, etc., then the insurance might be worth considering; it seems most accidents of that nature happen in a puppy's first year, so really the ideal would be to get the insurance *and* also contribute to an emergency savings account, so that in a year or two you'll have enough savings to be able to drop the insurance and still cover what they would have paid from the savings. |

| Very interesting! I do like the idea of putting money into a account for pet emergencies! What a good idea!

| PetCare I just purchased PetCare pet insurance at the end of December and my little one just got bit by a dog last week. I just turned in my claim form which was a bill for $600. The plan I purchased should cover $500 minus a $50 deductible for the dog bite. I'm also very iffy abt pet insurance, so this will be a test. I'll keep you all updated and see how the plan works. |

| I'm also iffy about insurance... My complimentary 6 week insurance from my breeder is now up, and last week I was all for calling in and renewing it for a year... But now I'm not sure if it's worth it. She had an ear infection as soon as I got her, but I didn't have a computer to print out the forms to take to the vet, plus the medicine was only $15. Even if she got that every month, I'd be losing money by paying $20 every month for insurance. Now I think I might hold off for awhile!

| PetCare update! Hello everyone! I just got a check from Pet Care reimbursing me for $500 (max limit for dog bites)! yay! The total I paid for Oakley's surgery was $606.16. I turned in the claim form via fax on Jan. 18 and they cut me a check on Jan. 24, which I just received today on Jan. 30. I will probably stick with the insurance until Oakley turns 1. But not sure about my beagle - he's turning 1 on March 9 and he's very active, so still considering whether to keep his policy. I hope this helps you all decide on whether or not to get pet insurance and which company to go with. Good luck! |
