| Potty training Hello All, My name is Marie and I am new to the site. I just added the cutest little Yorkie to my family and he is so sweet! His name is Reilly and he is about 13 weeks now. I got him Saturday night and he is adjusting quite well however potty training is a little tough. I've been hearing conflicting things - wee wee pads vs. outside. I take him outside in the morning as soon as I wake up and he goes then. Other than that he will not go outside. He is too distracted by the leaves and everything else. I take him out for walks and try to stay out as long as possible and he will not go. Then as soon as we get inside he goes. I tell him "NO" in a firm voice but he seems unfazed. I thought maybe he prefers inside. I bought wee wee pads and he just shreds them up. Not really sure what to do. I feel like a crazy person doing the same thing and when its not yielding any results. I know it's only been a few days but I feel like he is not connecting the NO with the action. Also, when he goes I say no and go to pick him up to bring him outside to teach him he growls and gets very nippy like he wants to hurt me. It doesn't seem like he is playing but I could be wrong... Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks much! Marie |

Biting can lead to aggression issues so that must be corrected as well. There are different approaches say No when they bite and pull away, make a pained sound like they hurt you and say NO. I would say no to Buster and then turn away from him so he understood that he would not get attention if he misbehaved. The crave our attention so if you take that away they know the fun/loving stops if they misbehave. I never ignore him too long as he forgets what he is being punished for with long time outs. I am sure more members will also have great advice.

| The main thing is don't give up. It took a solid month to get Dinky to understand the concept. I corralled him in the kitchen during the day with boxes at the room openings. He was not allowed run of the house until he was potty trained. I tried the pee pads, but I liked him going outside much better. I would say that it took two full months before I considered him trained. He back slid a couple of times. Both times, I went back to limiting him to kitchen, and he understood what that was about. Also, when you do get him to go outside, praise the heck out of him. We still praise Dinky 5 years later. Some dogs and some Yorkies are harder to train than others. It can be frustrating, but he will get it. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I am in the same process with our two which have onl been with us 6 days. I urchaed the book How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days by Shirlee Kalstone. it has been recommeended on this list often. I got the Iris pad holder large size - and buy the washable pads to put in the holder. If put in correctly they cannot pull them out, tear them up because they are cloth. I also got the small holder and found washable wheel chair pads fit it perfect to use later on. Found the Iris pad holder on Amazon.

| I don't have too much experience myself but don't give up! He'll get there! My little one thought his bed was his potty at first, and even now he hasn't mastered letting me know when he needs to go. He does know to potty outside now though so hopefully that is an encouragement that there is a light at the end of the tunnel

| Hi, We are living in France my yorkie Rex will be 15 soon, so will just tell you what I did with him, and my big dogs. I put news paper down,(I didn't have pads, besides they cost too much here) not far from his feeding bowl that was in the kitchen, when he had eaten his meal, I put him on the news paper and told him, "do a wee wee", ok you may think I'm daft, at first they don't understand. Also when he had pi pi on the ground, I put some news paper on this pi pi and tranferred it on the paper I had put down for him, so he had his smell. When he did his wee himself, I went over the moon to praise him and gave him a little treat. always place him on the news paper after eating, eventually he will go on to it himself. then gradually move the news paper near to the door that leads to out side.I found that he will pi on one paper and po on another, he didn't like to do on the same one, then one day once you see he is going on the paper ok, then move it away completely, make sure you are in the room when he goes to the back door where the paper was before, then you say, "do you want to go outisde", and open the door so he can go out, he will learn then to ask to go out. It works, all my dogs I did the same thing, big or small. Good luck. |

| Been there done that.....my first little yorkie took almost a year. But she was a rescue and I admit I wasn't the most consistent. However she did eventually learn and fortunately she went outside and used the potty pads. I love the option of having my little one use the potty pads because she hated going outside in any weather other than sunny and 80 degrees. I hated getting up in the middle of the night to walk down three flights of stairs (townhouse). So potty pads worked perfectly for me for when her royal highness didn't want to go outside. However, if I took her outside and said "go potty" she had no problem going. Word of caution on using the treats to get them to potty.....I'm sure most of us on here have experienced it. It is called fake potty....this is when these little buggers go outside fake pee to get a treat. Man was I outsmarted on that one....Brandi most of been fake peeing for months before I caught on to what she was doing. Last edited by yavenay; 10-14-2015 at 09:14 AM. |

| Hi, congrats on your new baby! Potty training can be tough, mine is basically trained but when he takes the notion he will pee in the house and he KNOWS better, he just looks at me like 'Haha what you gonna do" lol, little stinkers. Through YorkieTalk I found out about Best Belly Bands, they are AWESOME!! I cannot stress that enough! They are on Facebook, you order straight off their facebook page, they make them by the measurements of your baby, fabric choice (and they have some adorable fabrics) and do a beautiful job! I live in SC and they are in Texas, when I order mine they have them here in 3 days, they are super quick! Great priced, awesome product & fast, you can't go wrong! I keep them on Presley when I am busy and can't watch him every minute, he is mischievous and like I said before if he takes the notion he will pee wherever he pleases. These bands have been a huge help for me!

| I learned about how soon she had to go after eating and then took her outside. She hated pee pads! I was lucky as she was so easy to train. Only a few accidents in the house which were my own fault. She asks to go outside now and I no longer have to take her out through the night. She's 7 months old now and she's been trained since she was 4 month old. Just be consistent and a lot of praise. At first I took her out every 2 hrs around the clock! I felt like I had a newborn baby! Now I just have a spoiled baby! Lol |

| Thank you all for your suggestions! It's been a few weeks and a lot of work but I think my little furry face baby is getting it. I bought the kleanpaws system (basically it holds the pads and a grate goes over it so he cant get the pads) He doesn't like to go #2 on it but sometimes he does. It's great because the colder it gets the less he wants to be outside and I don't blame him (we're in CT so it's getting cold!) Anyway he is getting there but there is still more training to be done. I will be looking into your suggestions. Especially the reusable potty pads and the best belly bands. The other thing is he is picky about treats. He likes them for a little while and then I have to find something else. It's a full time job finding treats for him. He is spoiled! He'll go potty and I'll celebrate and give him treats and he'll turn his nose up at them. We'll get there! |
