Senior Yorkie Talker | Coats cause matting I like to keep Chloe with the long hair, I brush her everyday so she never has tangles, but in the winter when I have to put a coat or sweater on her, within a very short time, of having the coat on she is so tangled, I have to take her brush with me so I can brush her right away. Does anyone know if there are better materials for coats that will lesson this problem or any ideas, I don't want to clip her. |

| I have had this problem too but I did recently clip lilah's body hair. Satin and silk does seem to help prevent matting. A nice lady on here mentioned she braids her little guys hair before putting a jacket on. For me, this year it felt like a choice between clothes or hair and I really like dressing lilah and don't want to keep my heat up all the time and run the bill. I think if I kept her coat long we would have to, very sparingly, use jackets and sweaters (like outside) with careful measures in place like braiding and immediate before and after brushing and I would just have to keep the heat up higher. I love the long coat so I get really back and forth about it. I would love to hear more tips and tricks. Good luck!

| I agree that a satin lining or undergarment is ideal under clothing to minimize tangling. Soft cotton materials are better than fleece on my boys. Extra conditioner, a really good one, on bath days helps my boys. They usually only wear clothing outdoors. When I first remove the coats or sweaters, the boys' hair often looks like they stuck their paws in an electrical outlet. I wait a few minutes and let it calm down before brushing.

| Piper wears sweaters for winter outings such as shopping trips and visiting friends...Sometimes I let her wear her sweater for an hour or so after we get home because she is quite comfortable and happy in it (plus I think she figures maybe I'll take her someplace else since she's all set to go!). I almost always give her a quick brush with leave-in conditioner before getting her "dressed" and matting has not been an issue (Piper has a medium length coat, I'd say..??). |

| Oh Gail is such a sweetheart I giggle because now I realize I am mixing everything up but I could swear it was Gail who said she conditions and wraps them in a towel while enjoying a cup of tea to let the conditioner sink in! A site full of wonderful folks with great advice
