Default Is it okay to get my Biewer pup at 8.5 weeks?

I have finally found a wonderful new Biewer puppy! I asked the breeder if I could have him for Canadian Thanksgiving (Oct.12th) and she knows how much I need a new puppy in my life, so she said I could, the puppy will be 8.5 weeks then. I always leave for the U.S. in October, but have to wait for the rabies shot. The breeder says her vet will give my pup the rabies shot at eight weeks, instead of the second set of shots (which I will get for her later). Then I have to wait one more month to take her into the U.S. Would I be jeopardizing the puppy's health by doing this? Would appreciate some good advice.

I would NEVER recommend giving a 8.5 week old puppy a rabies shot!!! I am stunned!

Not sure that's a good plain. She needs her puppy shots and that includes a Parvo vaccination, Might be to many shots at one time, but you have to be certain about the Parvo shot.

Just trying to prevent you from a heartache. Parvo is a killer and if your pup should get it she might not survive. My son and I almost had the loss of a pup who got Parvo and thanks to a wonderful Vet she survived but she had some major digestion issues from that time.

Also 8 and a half weeks is rather young. Mama is teaching many things to her babies at that age.

Either way I hope you have a wonderful pup to love...Lynne

NO WAY should a pup EVER have a Rabies Shot at 8 1/2 weeks old. This baby needs all of it's other Vac's before that is done. This baby should stay with it's Mom until at least 12 weeks old.

This breeder should know that. How AWFUL of this breeder to even suggest this.

I would never, EVER give Rabies - of all shots - to any young pup like this. Please, do NOT do this to this poor innocent puppy....it deserves better and is at the mercy of your decisions. If you have any conscience whatsoever, you would first do right by this puppy and get the vaccines at the proper and safe times.

Put this pup FIRST. Your human needs and desires should come second, for sure.

I can not imagine the vet giving the rabies that early. My vet does not do rabies until they are at least 16 weeks old. Ours must have rabies shot by 6 months here, but it is recommended for dogs over 4 months. That is too young.

WOW this post has bothered me so much since my other post.

No REPUTABLE BREEDER would even allow this shot to be given at 8 1/2 weeks old and SHAME, SHAME on that Breeder and SHAME, SHAME on a Vet that would even do that. This Vet should know better.,

All I can say is prayers going for this baby if the Vac schedule isn't followed correctly.

I'm with you...ever since I read this thread, it has lingered with me and bothered me all morning bc I feel the pup is being put absolute last here - and that is wrong in my book when an innocent vulnerable creature is at a human's mercy. Very worried for this poor little baby .

Pup comes first, end of story. Do the right thing, please.

Do you need the rabies shot to travel with him into the USA? If that is the issue maybe you either need to not travel this year or look for an older pup or wait until your return to Canada in the Spring. 8 weeks is pretty young to make a journey to another country right off the bat. Lots of dangers. It's hard when you find " the one"....... But ultimately you have to do what is right by that little boy. Good luck.

I doubt that we will hear back from "Miss Snowbird" as she will probably do as she pleases and not what is best for this pup. She should get another vet's input on the rabies shot.

Thank you all for your very appreciated input. (Except for the nasty comment from "Miss Cherie," that was so unnecessary and so unkind, who peed in your cornflakes this morning?) I thought this was a place where you could come and learn and ask questions. If I wasn't worried about my pup, do you think I would be here asking questions and trying to figure out what is best for him? I do not know anything about shots, or when pups should leave their mom's, so I am trying to get a as much information as possible. I thought breeders knew what was the best to do. Of course I am now going to tell her that I do not want the rabies shot given at 2 months. Would it be okay at 3 months, or do I have to wait for 4 months? I will also tell her that I do not want to pick up the puppy at 8.5 weeks, I will wait until he is 3 months old. I want the best for my puppy. I have been so devastated and heartbroken since losing my beloved Chanel, and really need a puppy back in my life, but I will wait the extra month for him to have that extra time with his mom. To all of you who posted helpful, kind answers, I appreciate you all very much, thank you!

Sharon, I think you have a good plan to wait until he is 3 months and he can be safely vaccinated for rabies. I checked and saw that any pup coming into the U.S. has to be up to date on the rabies vac. He also will benefit being with his Mom at this formidable time.

I really hope the breeder will be agreeable to your plans to bring him home later. I am glad you have found a pup to fill your heart with love since losing Chanel. I'd love to see a photo of him as he sounds adorable!

I'm glad you are reconsidering getting him at 8 weeks and not following vaccine protocol. This will help ensure your puppy has the best possible start in life.

Here is a thread with vaccine protocols thst may help you know what to do and when. Good luck!

I don't think Cherie was nasty at all. Sadly, we see posts like this a lot and most people either don't come back or don't listen.
She said that she hopes you speak with your vet....that was actually a very good suggestion.
I would never purchase a pup from a breeder who was willing to do what that breeder is doing....sounds to me like it is more about the almighty buck to her than what is good for her puppies.
As has been posted many times on this forum, investigate your breeder first before you even fall in love with one of his/her puppies.

Come along dearie, be nice. This new mom is trying to get all the info possible and doesn't want to make a mistake. Hats off to all those who want to learn and thanks to all of you who share your own experiences.
