Omg Luckily - saw them coming

I was walking across my yard to my Dad's house (we are next door to each other) and all of a sudden there were dogs running up to me! Big giant one, little ones - 4 of them! The college kids across the street had let their's out to run with them and they'd taken off in the other direction and I had Elvira with me and the weimeraner was jumping up licking her on my shoulder and the boston terrier was jumping up my back! The kids finally grabbed them (they caught the poodle and the pit bull mix before they got to me) and pulled them off. I was scared to death! I didn't know if I could protect her or not and she was trying to climb up on top of my head!

WHY do people do this? can't they jog with the dogs on leash??? That really scared me.

Then - after lunch, I had the front door open but the glass door closed and Sabrina's throwing a fit and I look out and THERE is one of those dogs on the front porch digging at the glass!! I slammed the front door so it would scare him off.

I'm going to have to try and find some pepper spray or something. If I'd had both the girls with me I would have been in a mess.

What do you do???

sometimes there are big dogs on the loose around here and luckily none so far have been mean dogs. they have been nice gentle ones but the size scares me with Buckeye throwing fits to get to them. It is not that I am afraid of them getting to him ...its the fact that Buckeye is the one who would provoke them. I just grab him up and try to keep him soothed and run for home. There is a leash law here but sometimes they do get loose. mine included. like i say there have been none that would attack him first.....so far.

It is the "pack" to fear for sure. Many times, the dogs are sweet as individuals, but act as a pack when in a pack. IF you see these dogs loose again tomorrow, I would call the police too. It really isn't safe for the dogs or anyone else.

OMGosh...I am so glad that you and Elvira were not harmed...physically anyway! I agree with the others...call the police if you see them running loose again. The part about the dog scratching at the glass in your door scares me too. It seems to me like he's wanting your babies and I'd be very careful and watchful to keep yourself and your babies safe!

You were VERY lucky that nothing happened I hate it when this happens! Over here people let there dogs into the street ALONE,I guess they think its just easier to open their front door and let the dog out than to put it on a leash and actually walk it (how inconvinient!!) Iv been walking mine and suddenly Im surrounded by dogs who are out alone and of course its very scary, especially when theyre so much bigger than our babies.
I just wish some people (especially those with big dogs) would put their dogs on retractable leashes instead of just letting them loose, they should realise that those who have smaller dogs and are actually on a leash, could be in danger!
I had an argument with a women once because I was walking Jess and a HUGE mastin came running towwards us,I just froze,I dont think Id ever seen such a big dog! Of course I grabbed Jess but that was no use at all, this mastin was as tall as me!,then the owner screamed out from her front door across the street, she was telling me that her dog wouldent hurt mine.I was SO angry! I asked her what this dog was doing ALONE in the street and she said that he was going for his morning walk! Its just amazing that those of us that do the right thing and keep our dogs on a leash have to be harassed by those that are just charging around ruining our walks and pooping in other peoples yards! Its actually the owners that need a slap!

This is kind of mean, but I have found a squirt bottle with just a bit of hot red pepper in it works wonders. It probably stings a little and is irritating, but better than YOURS getting attacked. We take some with us when we go for walks. There really aren't ANY loose dogs in our neighborhood, but you never know. Someone near has a HUGE Rotweiler and you never know when she might be out of the fence. She is sweet as can be, but I don't trust (mot) other dogs, big or little, without their owners around.

I am a firm believer in the leash law - for every dog regardless of age or breed or disposition. It not only protects your dog it protects every one else as well. And it's just common courtesy to keep your dogs leashed - I mean, what if you were allergic to dogs, walking down the street, and someone's ignorance by not following the law puts you in the hospital?

My Dad's 3rd wife's granddaughter was mauled and killed by a pack of domesticated dogs in NC. A pack is something to fear ... nothing like the movie "Homeward Bound".

We had the most wonderful dog (a golden lab) that visited everyone in our neighborhood every day for years. Everyone loved this dog and enjoyed his visits.

I moved here then with my little pup (not a Yorkie). And, my little pup chased this larger dog constantly - nipping at it's back legs.

Finally, one day, the larger dog turned around and nipped my pup who definitely had it coming. It was just a nip - like a mother dog would give a pup that was driving her crazy. But, it was a good lesson for my pup. After that, he had a little more respect for our wonderful visitor. He still followed him around (which was okay) but kept a little more distance. And, everything was just fine after that.

I agree - I am especially always afraid when there is more than one strange dog running around my house. We know that two or three dogs will often do things that one dog by itself would never do.....the "herd instinct." How many times have we read where a pack of dogs has attacked a person or a child.

We have stray dogs around here only occasionally. And, they probably just got loose from their yards - this happens! And, they are usually very nice and friendly. But, we have to keep our eyes and ears open and safeguard out little pets -- who are afraid of nothing!

Glad to hear you and Elvira are ok. I would call the police and let them put it on record. I learned that the hard way. After being attack by a boxer-chow mix that jumped the fence. Thank God all he did was put a scratch on Maddies back leg, because the neighbor kept kicking him. The dog continued to jump the fence, so everytime he did we called amimal control. Finally they made them tie him to a run in the back yard. I even wrote the people a letter and they never even acknowledged they got it. Some people shouldn't be pet owners.
