YT 1000 Club Member | When to switch to adult food? My puppies are 6 1/2 months old and I was just wondering at what age should I switch them to adult food? The vet did not have an opinion when I asked. He said they are too thin. They are both 7 lb 6 oz. Raksha is bigger than Rowan and light as a feather to pick up, Rowan is smaller and more solid. I thought his weight was fine and hers was just light. I free feed them as I have since I brought them home in May. I was thinking sometime around 10 months to switch them to adult food? If they are still thin should I keep them on puppy food until a year? I can feel their ribs if I push on them at all, but just picking them around the rib area I don't feel them and their back bones are not protruding when I pet them. I thought she was a little thin, but did not think Rowan was, I think he feels pretty solid. There is a big difference in how they feel for sure. She is taller and longer than him but weighs the same as him. They eat very well and seem to love the food they are on (what they came on).

| I would increase the amount they are eating, if they are a little on the thin side....it is great they love the food....do not mess up and change THAT!!! Keep them on what they are eating until 10 months old and just increase the amount you are giving them.....they are in a growth spurt and everything they are taking in is going to bulding! Just curious, what are they eating? 10 months of age for their size is a good time to start switching to adult food....just increase the amount you are feeding, especially if they are getting lots of exercise! |

| We switched Zeus over to adult food last month (10 months old). We did it gradually and mixed it in with his puppy food. We made sure to buy the same brand adult food (grain free, chicken based). He's done really well and completely adjusted now. |

YT 500 Club Member | I just talked with my breeder last week. Ruger is 8 months. Breeder said to switch @ 1 year with the same brand but in adult form. Oh, & also Ruger weighs 5.5 lbs. & I can feel his ribs and spine very well. He is real active, 100 miles a minute. Starting about 6 months he started eating less. I leave food out and he gets healthy treats. I just mashed a banana with plain yogurt put it in round ice trays. When frozen goes into his Kong. Yummy 🍨 🍦

YT 1000 Club Member | My pups have food available to them all day long. They eat whatever they want when they want. They are currently on Purina Puppy Chow, only because that is what they came to me on and they do seem to like it. I am looking at a different brand of adult food when I switch them over. I will do it over about a 2 week period as I have had a dog that had IBS and any changes had to be very gradual or she would get very sick. I thought the boy puppy was looking perfect. I know the girl puppy is thin, but I didn't think it was too much. They eat well and I think it is because they play all day long or they are sleeping. They play very hard so I am sure they are burning a ton of calories. I don't know about how to get them to eat more as they eat whenever they want to eat. I will probably start switching them over about 10 months and then by 11 months they will be on the new food. Thanks for the advice.

| I remember having a similar question to this but it was for when to switch to dry and my furbaby pretty much decided that on her own whether I liked it or not, lol (snubbing wet food and going after the dry "big" girls food) I started to integrate adult food (mixing with puppy food) for her when she was around 9-10 months, but it was a large mix so we wound up having a adult/puppy mix waaay past her full transition for adult feeding. So at the beginning of summer (a couple of months after our birthday), we gave that mix away and switched over completely to an adult formula for small breeds. So I'd say at least by 1 years of age, give or take a few months, but transition a little before that.
