| In search of puppy Hello. I'm a new user to this site. I am looking to adopt or buy a Yorkie puppy near the Syracuse NY area. Cannot afford over $250 for price. If there is anyone with 50 miles of Syracuse and would agree to the amount posted, I we could love to hear from you or if you help in my search, I Thank you in advance. |

| I would recommend you look into shelters and rescues. I have no idea how much a rescue requires though. Good luck.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I agree! Rescues would be your best bet. Yorkies are costly.

| While you wait for one to become available, try to research the breed and learn everything you can about them. Their personalities, their grooming needs, their vet needs, their genetic strengths and weaknesses. Learn absolutely everything you can about them and that will make your home with a yorkie a much, much happier and healthier home.

| I would caution you NOT to get ANY yorkie for $250.00. I would strongly suspect it was either deathly ill or stolen. Your best chance of getting a puppy, and probably NOT a yorkie, would be to look at rescues or the pound. Another important thing to consider is Yorkies are relatively high maintainance....especuially one you were sold for only $250.00! I would suspect you are not in a position financially to provide the care any yorkie you may be sold for $250.00....dental care yearly runs well over that, along with vaccinations, deworming, etc.... | The exception to the rule....congratulations on your successful venture thru a mine field....still not something I personally advocate or trust. If the chances of getting a healthy Yorkie for around $250.00 was commonplace, there would be very few Yorkies available over that price. Kind of like buying a brand new Corvette for $500.00....it just is not the "norm".....and if you stumble on such a deal, good for you....but realize it costs you big bucks to either fix all the issues you possibly are going to have later, or just general maintenance on such a car is obviously going to be high dollar! I remember when they stole the Cadillac emblem off the hood of my new Cadillac....well, I drove that baby right down to the dealer, ordered me up a new hood ornament for my pretty car, and almost dropped over dead at the cashier when he smiled and announced proudly, "That will be $350.00 please!!" |

| lol you're not going to find a good looking Yorkie that goes for $250. That's like trying to buy a Ferrari for 20k dude. And good luck trying to find a nice Yorkie at rescues you gonna need it Last edited by Purty816; 09-13-2015 at 04:26 PM. |

| I suggest researching the cost of vet bills, food ect....Makesure you have the budget fo it. Yorkies can cost more then your average dog. Most little dogs go to the vet more . From accidents or dental. You can spend $250 even if you rescue theres maintenance. |

| I wouldn't trust the person selling a yorkie for $250. Heck, I bought a yorkie mix for twice that! Be wary of people selling a yorkie for so little. I agree with the others who are saying the maintenance is costly. Between the vet, groomers and the food it can be expensive. |

| On this board, in the "yorkies for sale area" (TX) there is a shelter/rescue worker that posts fairly regularly with yorkies and yorkie mixes for adoption. Some are pure that were owner turn ins. She said it is $20.00 plus spay/neuter to adopt them. I just paid $68.00 at a vet to have my little guy neutered in May. They will not have papers in almost all cases, but not everyone cares if they have papers on their pets. She/he seems like a legit shelter/rescue worker and I would suspect there is a shelter/rescue or two near this poster she can at least look into. I got my little guy (he is a mix) at a pound for a total of $78.00, and I would not trade him for anything. He is now one less "stray" that will be put down and he is now happy, and productive. Good luck Sudie, and I hope you find what you are looking for.

| You can say that again. After todays specialist visit we are about $50 short of 4 grand for the year. You never know what is going to happen with any breed but the small breeds, IMO, require more care. A shelter sounds like a great place to start if the budget is tight. It could save some money and you could provide a home to a furbaby that is just waiting to love you forever.

Apparently you live in an area where there are different types of dogs in shelters. I live in Syracuse NY where the OP Sudie lives. I checked daily with our shelter for over a year for a "small" dog. Almost all our shelter gets are pitbulls and/or large dogs. They rarely get any small dogs or puppies. I have friends that work there that would also call me if they did. In ONE YEAR, I received TWO calls. That $250 that the OP wants to buy a yorkie with would barely get her a pitbull at our local shelter; they charge $180 to adopt a dog. I wish her good luck. This is a hard area to find a yorkie in for a decent price. I would suggest she put the word out to friends, friends of friends, and family that she would like a yorkie if anyone is giving one away.

| To all the people who responded to my message. Thank you for being truthful about getting a Yorkie. Maybe this breed is not for me, I am very discouraged in even trying to search anymore or even increasing my looking price. I did find 2 sellers around $250 to $300. I didn't care if they had papers as long as the puppy was healthy. You really scared me so my search is over. Thanks again for the advice. |
