| Getting puppy spayed I'm nervous getting Zoey spayed. Not because she's small. She's 13 lbs at 25 weeks so she's not small. But she's such a baby and whines when she doesn't feel well. I'm getting her pain meds for 3 days also. This makes me nervous. I have to get her spayed though. I definitely don't want her to have puppies or having to deal with her being in heat. She's a yorkie/poodle mix. Another reason not to breed her. Just want this to go well. |

| I always worry when my pets get spayed or neutered. I am always pleasantly surprised when they are back to normal by the 2nd day. Duchess was back to normal on the same day as the surgery. In fact she was up and ready to play when I went to pick her up. I had to put her in her expen to keep her calm. I did give her a half of dose of pain med that actually made her really sleepy. After her nap she wanted to play but I left her in expen and boy that's when the whining started. It was easier keeping her calm out of her expen. I've been very fortunate in that all of my pets came through spay (all female pets) with no side effects. |

| I don't know how she's going to be with that collar on either! I'm definitely going to keep her in a small area so she won't be jumping around for a week or so. I'm going to be sad seeing her hurting but it must be done. |

YT 1000 Club Member | My puppies are being fixed on Sept 10th. I have a male and a female. They will turn 6 months old on Sept 9th. I am hoping to avoid the cone by putting onesies on them (backwards with their tails out the snaps) and I am hoping it will keep them from chewing at their stitches. I have been having them wear the onesies for a little bit each day to get them used to them. I am also a stay at home mom so I will be home with them all day. I have kept my schedule completely clear for at least a week after the surgery. The only time I will have to leave them is to run the kids to and from school which does not take long. I can crate them while I am gone if I feel the need, or take one (or both) with me so that they will not be running around fighting while I am gone for 20 minutes or less. Everything else has been kept clear so I will be home with them.

YT 500 Club Member | My little guy was just nurtured. He did excellent! I was worried too - please no cone - he came home the next day. The vet said to limit activities- ha! He wanted to go a hundred miles an hour. No pain meds no cone & he left his stitches alone. Wow! I was so surprised of this stinker and he IS a little stinker. There was someone with him all day for a week. His stitches didn't get removed for 2 weeks. Your babies will be just fine. Try and not let them know you are so worried. 😀 |

| I always send my babies home with instructions to wait until the pup is 8 months old...that is the time in their development and growth when the growth plates are completed growing......it has been my experience that vets encourage spay/neuter for several reasons....pet population control, generating revenue for their practice, all reasonable goals....but pets that are NOT running the streets, can be controlled and spayed/neutered safely at 8 months of age...if they accidentaly do come into heat prior to spay, just watch them and have it done after the heat cycle....it is what is supposed to be better for the health of the dog....and it is proven health wise, the growth patterns should be of concern and the bones and joints allowed to mature completely before spay/neutering. I advocate spay/neutering....I require it in all my puppies sold. But allow the pup to reach its finest, best potential before having the procedure done....and multiple, valid studies, away and apart from entities that are strictly pushing birth control, studies done by prestegeous vet schools, etc suggest it is necessary for the growth pattern to complete prior to spaying/neutering.....and this is usually achieved at 8 months of age. This is no HUGE disruption for responsible pet owners...you watch your dog and have the procedure done when your pet has reached its fullest potential in growth and development....spay/neuter advocates even do the procedures on 8 week old puppies, which is absolutely absurd....but unfortunately necessary for strays that have puppies in shelters that will be "hitting the streets" in questionable homes/owners.....but responsible owners are usually encouraged to wait until the pup has reached its full maturation/growth/developmental potential, and that happens at 8 months of age, give or take a couple of weeks. Allow your baby to be the very best it can be, developmental wise.....hopefully, Yorkie owners are responsible enough to at least watch their young ladies closely enough to catch them right before their first season, or even allow them to come in for one season and then have them spayed. |

| We have all gone through the anxiety, worry, stress when our fur kids had to be spayed or neutered, you are not alone, as others have stated you will be amazed at how quickly they are back to their little ole selves, even tho they want to run and play follow your vets instruction on how long to keep them calm, they still need that healing time even tho they want to get back to their running and jumping. Two girls (now passed) were ready to go the day I took them home from their surgery, it's amazing how quickly they bounce back. She will be just fine, the day of her surgery PLEASE remain calm, your pup will feed off your fear / anxiety and get up set because momma is, so, for the sake of your baby, hard as it may be, stay cheerful for her.

| Thanks for the replies! I'll stay cheerful for her without getting her excited and wanting to play. Even though she's a mix she has the personality of a yorkie. Some time ago I had a puppy spayed very young. The vet did it at about 12 weeks. Now I know better. Back then I didn't know much. No internet to look things up. I figured the vet knew when to do it. She was a chihuahua so you can imagine how small she was! Terrible! |

| Mario was neutered before I could pick him up from the pound. He is about a year old. He did really well with minimal pain meds for 2 days and no cone.. I gave pain meds if he appeared to need it or not since it so hard to tell if they are pain at his age; the need to play overrides the pain. I stayed home with him, and told him no when he tried to lick the incision area. He caught on quickly, and just left it alone. My mother was going to adopt a pup, and the shelter and vet told her she needed to get it spayed/neutered (don't recall the gender) at 6 weeks of age. It was a small dog, but not as small as a yorkie. I told her no way, you need to wait until at least until it is 6 mo old so the bones will have had enough time to mature. She picked another dog, since this shelter would not release it unless she fixed it ASAP. |

| I have always gotten mine done at 16 weeks and they have all been fine. I refuse to use the collars or cones because then they cant walk. I simply get a baby onesie and cut a hole for the tail and for potty. |

| I too agree that you will be surprised about how fast they are ready to go 100 mph. Bella got spayed when they did her Liver shunt surgery so they would not have to cut on her again. 2 days after major surgery, she was wanting to play and run. It was really hard to keep her calm.

| Took her this morning and she's done. Going between 4-5:00est to pick her up. She whines the whole way there (an hr) because she hates the car. No baby teeth needed pulled either. Can't wait to get her back home. I'm going to get her a onesie. Hope I get the right size for her! |

| Btw how do you keep the onesie from moving? I'm confused about how it's going to stay over the incision. |
