Donating YT 3000 Club Member | If you want a pup Please read. . . I have a little story. . . I get stopped all the time when people see Galen. . . I want a dog just like him . . This is what it takes to have one this small. . . ( Galen comes from a reputable show breeder. He was just small. ) I am home so I monitor him all the time. I have to make sure he eats. He is a finicky eater. Sometimes It comes down to hand feeding him. Even my Mom knows and sits on the floor and hand feeds him. I have Nurtical on hand all the time. Also I have to make sure he doesn't eat something shouldn't, Lick the floor, get into anything . . .You basically have a child for 13 - 16 years. He is not allowed to jump down on the floor from the couch. He is not even allowed to climb up and down the stairs in my house. When I do leave the house and I can't take him with me. He is in an x pen to keep him safe. When he comes with me, I have a bag full of items food, water, Nurtical etc. He only wears a harness, no collar, when he is on a leash. Most of his collars are breakaway with little bells on him so you know when he is underfoot. He is potty pad and outside trained . He is never allowed outside by himself or without a harness and leash. A hawk can pick him up and take him away. In cold weather he doesn't go out. He has sweaters and winter coats to keep him warm. Since Galen is not afraid of anything. He thinks he is the size of a Wolfhound and he plays like he is one. I watch every dog around him. He can be stepped on or picked up in a NY minute. The reason for the story. . . I have seen way too many sick pups. Pups brought home to early or just not knowing the breed. Bringing them home because they are so cute or I want a pocket dog. . .Then there is a problem and the puppy owner wants help. The Yorkie and Biewer are toy breeds. Not a teacup, micro mini, a tiny micro mini or any other inventive name given . . . They are one size. Doesn't matter the weight. With the Internet so excessible , there should be no reason why people should not be researching about a dog breeds. Go to the AKC or the breed club websites. Their will be a lot of information about the breed. And if you don't have access to the Internet go to the library. There are many books on the subject. Did you bring them to the vet for a wellness exam ? Do you know what is required for this breed ? What are their standards. . . What age to get them at? Yes, different breeds leave at different times. A Large breed can leave a 8 weeks but a toy breed needs to stay longer, 12 weeks or more. . .What medical issues they have? . . Where to purchase a healthy one. A reputable breeder not a pet store, Craig's List or the newspaper. Yes pet store advertise AKC but the are from puppy mills. Don't believe if they say different. Please research the breed before you purchase one. It could be the life of your little one.

| How old and big is he?? I for one like to see the puppy eat kibble. If they are a good eater then i feel good about the pup. Winnie was a good eater at the breeders but when i brought her home she needed to be hand feed for a few weeks. New environment probably.. But I'm lucky enough my wife is an at home dog sitter.... So theres always someone there for my girls. And never left home alone longer then 2-3 hrs....Some exceptions like an evening party but not everyday and I have security camera on them |

Please, know what you are doing BEFORE you go hunting for a puppy. KNOW what is normal and what is not. Know what to look for as you search for a puppy. When you see puppies being dispersed/dumped at 6 weeks 8 weeks old, you can bet you are about to get your heart broken...there are 2000 excuses "why" this immature baby "must" be dumped....steer clear....these are usually excuses to avoid spending the money to provide what the puppy is supposed to be getting to keep it healthy. Stay away from pet store puppies....they are from puppy mills and dont believe it when they swear they come from top notch breeders, etc.....Please, read all about what you are about to buy and get involved with. There is absolutely no reason in the world to buy a puppy without having STUDIED the breed and what they require. If you jump blindly, head first, into getting a puppy, especially a breed you are cluless about, there is an old song that comes to my mind....paraphrasing here...." If you are sitting on the train track, and you can see the train coming, and you hear the horn blowing, and you see the head lite flashing, and you choose to walk onto the track and you do not move, you are going to get exactly what you have set your own self up for!"

| Great advice to research the specific needs of a breed before bringing home a pup. We did not know quite what we were getting into when we brought Max home. Although we had taken care of Yorkie for a neighbor, she was not typical and gave us a false sense of ease.

| I am very confused by your post. Not allowed to go up or down the stairs? What the heck? Yorkies are hearty, healthy, fiesty hunters. I have a four pounder and a nine pounder. Neither one is a fragile, breakable butterfly. They are DOGS! Specifically bred to run and hunt. Stop it! Take him for a run in the park and chill out. You have spent too much time on Yorkie talk with the jaded owners. Take a breath. Go and play. |

I actually think this was a great post with lots of good info. I live in a 1 story house but if I had stairs I wouldn't allow my pups to go up and down either. My girl will be 1yr next month and last time she was weighed she was not even 3 pounds. Her parents were 4 and 6 pounds and she was expected to be 4 pounds. All blood work and health exams have been clear of any issues she is just small but with her size a fall could injure her very badly. In a house with young kids and small dogs safety is very important and people really need to understand what they are getting into. Just my opinion

| I'm not cool with you preaching about uneducated owners, when you yourself have no confidence to leave your dog alone in the house for danger of the scary stairs. Boo. As for the reputable "show dog breeder", a good breeder doesn't sell a dog that makes the owners worry all the time due to its size. I'm really not trying to be mean. But don't come on here and brag about your wee tiny dog when everyone on here is against that! Ps: standard Yorkie size is 7lbs. Let's all get that through our heads. |

| I never understood why people get so worked up on this site until tonight. If you bought a three pound dog, deal with it. Don't come on here and cry about their safety. You messed up. It's not healthy. It's unethical. Yorkies are hearty hunters. Sturdy, strong, TERRIERS. Read up on terriers. They are not meant to be caged because you are scared their toothpick legs will break on the stairs. I do have empathy for all who are afraid for their tiny dogs, but you perpetuated the practice by buying. It's really not cool. And now you have a miserable dog that is kennelled all day because you are scared for its bird bones. Gee whiz! |

| The advice given by the op is good. May not apply to all pus but if you are in search of a little one. I believe thats what implied. The larger ones seem more sturdy but ppl are always looking for the small ones. Under 4lbs 2-3. Then they have more needs. I prefer 5-7 lbs range. Seems more sturdy. 5-7lbs not over weight |

| Oh yes..."showing." As if. My yorkies are members of my family. I don't "show"my dogs. Just as I don't "show" my children. What the heck? This is a status thread. "I spent $3000 on a dog for looks." Here are my thoughts on papers...I call it "inbreeding." I also call it, "small genetic pool." Bet all your tails are docked too, right? For looks? Goodnight. Sorry I lost my temper. |
