| Spaying and baby teeth removal My baby, Little Miss Elliot, is getting spayed tomorrow. She will be 8 months old this week. I put it off a couple of months because she is so small (at least to me). She is currently 4 lbs. She looks like a midget compared to her brother, Duncan, who is 2 months older and weighs 12 lbs. I am very nervous about the surgery because of how little she is but I was afraid to let it go any longer because I didn't want her to go into heat. I have been keeping my fingers crossed for the past few weeks. Hopefully, she won't tonight. I know many of you have dogs that are smaller and have had them spayed. Do puppies that are smaller have any additional pain or healing times? Elliot also is having some baby teeth taken out. She has a couple teeth in the front that are "doubles" and some other baby teeth in the back that haven't come out yet. I figured I would get both done at the same time as has been suggested here many times. Do they have any pain from getting these baby teeth pulled out? How long does it take for the adult teeth in the back of the baby teeth to move into place? Does anyone have any secrets to keeping these acrobatic yorkies from jumping off and on and over things and running all over the place beyond crating them? Elliot only has one speed and that is fast and quick. She is constantly jumping and running around. I have no clue how I am going to keep her calm and quiet, for one day, let alone 10 days. Duncan is a very laid back puppy and I didn't have much problem keeping him from running around when he was neutered. I bought a couple of onesies for her to wear so she doesn't lick her incision. Any other suggestions that I should know about before tomorrow? Any positive thoughts sent her way would be appreciated. Thanks.

| I'm sorry that I can't speak to spaying; however, my tiny boy, Zeus, was neutered at 6 months and 3 days weighing 3.7 lbs. I didn't want him to hike or hump was the reason for the rush. When I went to pick him up, they said I was lucky that the male doctor did not do his neuter (the female did). His were so small she had a hard time getting to them; therefore, the smaller hands helped. She said he was the smallest she had ever done. He came through unscathed, although we were terrified of the being put to sleep. He never once tried to chew or lick his sutures (lucky us), so no cone! By the way, he is 10 months now and is 3.8 lbs. The vet doesn't think he will get any bigger. He is our tiny baby! We were lucky with the teeth. He had lost all baby teeth but one by 6 months. We had no trouble with the pulled tooth at all. I hope everything goes well for you and your sweet girl. |

| She will probably be fitted with a cone after surgery. I doubt the teeth pulled will be of much consequence pain wise. The surgery will be more uncomfortable and she will probably be given pain meds for a few days. I would not want to be crated either for ten days. Can you block off an area with baby gates that can be her recovery area? This will limit her running and jumping. She will probably need to be separated from the boy as he will lick her boo boo if she can't reach it. LOL... they help each other like that. When she is feeling better tether her to you so you know exactly what they are doing and to give her a bit of exercise. Best wishes and keep us posted. |

| Lu got her operation at 6 months exactly, it just happened to fall on that date. The poor girl was very sore for a while, so we just put blankets on the floor for her to sleep on since she couldn't climb into her bed. She was in the 4lbs range also when it was done and everything went fine. The vet said her bits were the size of a small cats! She also had a couple of baby teeth removed. That didn't seem to bother her at all. She had to go back a couple of months later to get 2 more baby teeth taken out but again, that didn't seem to phase her. Lots of TLC and your little girl will feel better in no time Good luck to her! |

| We are at the vet's now waiting to talk to the surgeon before Elliot's spaying. I am so nervous and upset. I didn't sleep all night and had to take Zofran this morning to settle my stomach. Elliot weighs 4.3 lbs today. She gained .7 lbs. She is so mad at me because she couldn't eat or drink this morning. She keeps yelling at me☺ I am praying all will be well. I appreciate all positive thoughts and prayers. I know i will feel much better when they call later and tell me the surgery is over and Elliot is fine and dandy.

| Spaying not happening today - Very very upset! Quote:
I am so upset about my baby. I am glad that the arrhythmia was heard before surgery so that my Elliot didn't die during surgery. The office called the vet hospital for an appointment with a cardiologist and there is a wait list of 40 people! They suggested I call Cornell Hospital for an appointment with a cardiologist and they don't have any appointments available until November. So, I guess we wait for now. The good thing is that Elliot at the moment doesn't have any other symptoms that would make it an emergent matter. I am to keep an eye on her for other developing symptoms. She was happy to be able to go home to eat

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi - best of luck on the spaying - I'm sure she will just fine ! Before leaving the vet, *make sure* you have pain medication AND a pain plan for what you're supposed to do if/when it appears that the pain is not being managed enough -- the vet will have a plan for that, and you should know it ahead of time, always. Stay ahead of the pain by making sure you give pain meds on time. Try to keep her quiet by giving lots of chew bones or chew toys or kongs etcetera. You will be surprised how quickly she snaps back...but be prepared that the first night she may be groggy, foggy, seem low, quiet. Let us know when she is out of surgery!!!

| Bella was spayed at the same time she had her liver shunt surgery. At the time she only weighed a little over two pounds. As for keeping them out of high gear, it is very difficult. For the first couple of days we kept her in a baby playpen, but even then she would get up on her hind legs and try to climb. They seem to have really high pain tolerance and have to be protected from themselves at times. But if your little one doesn't appear to be having discomfort, after the first few days you kind of have to let them have some say in their activity or they will put more energy and possible damage from trying to get to run and play then the possible damage of letting them do it.
