| Males should be neutered early just like females? Hi everyone, In regards to accidental litters/mating is it not equally as important male dogs are neutered young as females? Today I was speaking with people about Penny, who many of you know due to a big operation at around 4 months is being spayed after her first season as opposed to before any season. I was discussing worrying about going camping in September Ive booked as she has not yet had her first season. I was discussing whether to take her with me and use bitch spray and nappies or whether to leave her with family. Im very responsible and would never have her off lead etc in a season, its my decision to make and will probably leave her at home for the 3 days if she is in season. However I was told all dogs will come and mount her forcefully and get her pregnant from 3 miles around as thats how far they can smell a bitch in season from. ALSO its will stress out all the dogs around who arent neutered!! However, what annoys me is why don't owners get their male dogs neutered as pups as well!!!!! Why is it just down to the owner of the female. I know many do but from that conversation and from reading some forums it seems the less of a responsibility to male owners than females. It should be equal. I feel frustrated by the conversation.

| Your concern should be for your dog, do what is best for your dog. There are many ignorant dog owners that are not aware of neutering a male for health reasons. I have known many a male dog owner that didn't want to take the dogs "manhood" away from the dog, or didn't have the funds for it, many more reasons why they didn't want to neuter their dogs. Me, I am concerned for my dog. I always had females, my first 2 were not spayed and I paid dearly for that mistake. Paid by them getting Pyometra and died, my next two were spayed. My vet spayed my girls BEFORE their first heat (first season) which was appox. 5 months old. I would NEVER trust leaving an intact female with ANYONE if she was close to coming into season, but that is me. Do not upset yourself with the question of why male dogs are not neutered, take care of your girl and feel safe. Spaying if not breeding is done for heath issues.

YT 1000 Club Member | I guess it can go along with the saying of "Boys will be boys" but women have to remain "Good Girls".. Utter nonsense imo. Be responsible for your pup and take precautions as needed, that's all you really can do. I haven't neutered/spayed my pets, 2 of which will be shown. I'm not ignorant/irresponsible nor do I allow my pets around nonspayed/neutered animals of the same or opposite sex when in season. |

| Speaking purely of male dog owners who won't neuter and who aren't into showing, frankly I feel it's themselves that has a problem with their own masculinity. How having a neutered dog makes them less of a man I'll never understand. But since there is a thing called "neuticles" obviously a lot of people feel this way. Having to put implants in your dog purely for cosmetic purposes even after you've done the right thing and had them fixed if beyond me. It's right up there with men not wanting to have a small dog bc it "makes them look gay". Anyway, I agree with the above posters. Do what you think is best for you and your dog. You can't change other people's minds. But I also agree, don't leave your girl while in heat in the care of someone else. No matter how much you think you trust a person, the bottom line is, it's not their dog. However, a dog can be fixed too early. I had a foster who was neutered at 4 months. Hardly any of his baby teeth had fallen out at that point, so he ended up with crooked double set of teeth and really bad breath.

| The same importance of timely neutering should be the same with males as spaying is with females. In a perfect world it would work that way however most in society today dont think that way unless they are animal advocates or have been around someone who is. Its sad but true and if someone doesnt have to worry about their dog getting pregnant they are not going to be as responsible getting it altered

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Since a female can get pregnant all of her life, it's really important to neuter her, and I heard a male can smell a female from ten miles around! Many advantages of neutering a male too, the number one cause of death in unneutered males is the result of injuries due to car accidents, they will try and run away much more often. Also, they will be less likely to mark in the house and their urine won't smell so strong. They also are less aggressive. Basically you are keeping them little boys instead of becoming men! So many countries have terrible problems with the pet population explosion, in Mexico they don't neuter that often and the result is that thousands of dogs are starving, so for me, the number one reason to neuter is so that every pet born will have a loving home that can afford to feed and care for it. By the way, diapers won't keep her safe. Males will rip through those.

| Buddybear was fixed before he was 6 months. I wanted to stop marking etc before it started. He was lifting his leg at the beginning of 4 months.....can't remember exactly how old he was but he's never marked in our home. |

| My sister has had her large breed dogs fixed before they started lifting their legs and they always squatted for the rest of their lives. I prefer a male dog to squat bc it won't spray when they pee. Luckily for me, even thought Toto lifts his leg, his pee stream is nothing more than a dribble, even when he really has to go. Weirdest thing ever.
