YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Getting ready for the ageing process If we are lucky enough to have our dogs for some years - we all will face both the ageing process, and then inevitably the final good-bye. As loving dog owners it is not something we like to think about - but it is part of what we sign up for when we get our first adorable puppy. As your dog ages, more frequent vet care is indicated. Why? To try to catch inbalances when they start. So you might think about 2x per year visits. Special bloodwork Adding appropriate enzymes or supplements to their diet. There is no one right answer here - but this is food for thought. What happens when your ageing senior gets diagnosed with a life threatening illness that might cost many more $$$ than you have? How do you make the decision to give or not that particular care? Do you try to raise funds on some sites like GoFundMe - do you know what organizations exist to help vet owners with assistance on medical bills? How will you know when it is time to let go? Again no simple answers. But I can say a dogs life well-lived - loved - given an enriched life with their owners goes a long way to helping you sort through the decisions at some point you will need to make. As hard as it is to think about these things - do give it some thought. I do all the time with my now senior boy - I know where I will likely go with a lot of situations. I have not only thought through it but agonized over it.

| My pet is a member of my family. My net worth is her net worth. If I can save her with something I have then it is done. If that won't work, then I guess it's a life of crime for me!

| You are right, it is something we need to think about. Another thing we need to consider is, what will happen to them if something happens to us first? This is something we need to plan for. We know our little friends and hopefully we not put them though pain and/or treatment that is for our own benefit. Years ago we had a Bichon. He had IBD and developed bladder stones which required surgery. After the surgery he was incontinent of urine. He wore belly bands for many years after that and I didn't feel that affected his quality of life. When he was 17 1/2 he had a stroke. Did not know where he was or us and we had to make the BIG decision. With the help of our vet, we knew it was time. We knew we had made the right decision for him but it still left us with "what ifs" and took a long time to accept another little one into our lives.

| I am 71 years old and Zoey is only 9 months so, I have spend the last 6 months interviewing and reviewing every friend and family members life style and situation, in order to figure out who to name in my will as her guardian, if I should I die first. It is not only her medical health I am concerned with, but also who will care for her if I am not here. PS......I did find the perfect guardian, just in case ! |

Great post. After waiting 16 years after our mistey passed my wife and I got Sophie, our first yorkie. She is a year old now and I would spend my last dime for her well being and sell any thing I have to help her. My wife and I are in quite elderly and Sophie means every thing to us. Jim | |

| It feels like just yesterday when I took my first yorkie home. That was 15 years ago. For all the joy he's given me, I owe him the very best as he faces his medical challenges and his old age. Thes last five months have been a turning point for him...and as I see him getting older, not hearing as well, and having a tougher time, I think about when the end will be upon us. When I find myself thinking like that, I push the thoughts out of my mind and enjoy my time with him. I have another that is also 15, but seems stronger. My best advice to anyone with a young dog is to keep up with prevention early. I think this is what's helped my dogs to live long full lives.

YT 3000 Club Member | Very good points, Chester is almost 13 and he is still doing well. Im now doing complete yearly blood work, and anything he needs he gets, he is my love. I travel a lot in the summer as we are on road trip number 3 in a another week, I don't drive but 3-350 maybe unless its cooler out, don't want to tire him out too much. I also have people set up in case something happens to me. Im very picky like we all are who would take my love. |
