| Moving advice Hi YT! Long time lurker of forum needing some advice. I'm daddy to a female Yorkie that's almost 2. Her name is Malani. We (wife, Malani and I) are moving from NY to Austin TX next month. Any advice on making a smooth transition to new home for Malani? Traveling part I'm not concerned about, as we will be driving over a few days. She has done 14hr road trips and 2 roundtrip flights so far this year and handled them like a champ. I'm just concerned about her transition to our new home. We will likely be in temporary housing (hotel) for the 1st couple weeks while finalizing housing and movers arrive with our stuff. Over the last 12 months she has stayed in 3 different hotels, totaling 12 nights, without much issue, other than some barking. Potty and eating schedules shift a bit but hasn't been a big issue and settle out in a couple days after arriving at destination. She has not had any issues with diarrhea like some stories I've read on here. She's potty trained very well for outside. She use to be pad trained but as soon as she did her first outside event, she wants nothing to do with the pad. She sleeps with us in bed. She stays in a play pen (3'x3') during the day when the wife is at work and I'm sleeping (I work nights) and does well with this. Once in Austin, wife will be working from home. Based on the above, any recommendation or advice on making this transition smooth as possible for Malani? Any past experiences you can share? Any Austin-ites with info please share! Thanks! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT - glad you posted! What a big change, going from NY to Austin...but it sounds wonderful; Austin is such a great city. Honestly, I don't have much to recommend only bc your girl sounds so well prepared and well traveled too. The only thing I can really say is to keep her most favorite and familiar things with her so that she has them. Oh, and of course have a doggie Emergency Kit...do you have one of those? If not - see this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/eme...g-dosages.html Probably *the* most important thing to have in the ER kit (imo) is Benadryl cut down to 1/4th of a pill size in case of an insect sting or some other allergic reaction that could be an emergency...Benadryl can literally save a life .

| We moved from atlanta to DC in January . We lived in an apartment prior and now we are in a condo that's easier for potting outside. I think trying to keep the schedule but it sounds like you're ready and will be fine.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Sounds like your gal is a well seasoned traveller. What I would be first concerned with is finding a vet in Austin. Next as you will literally be in a different part of the country what are the cautions you need to be aware of with the local environment. Austin I think is extremely hot in summer so be aware of tender pawpads on pavement. Know signs of heat exhaustion. Are ticks rampant there? If your wife will be home most of the day your gal will probably adjust very quickly to your new home. The best of luck with your move and new life in Austin.

| Welcome to YT!! Best of luck with your move. Austin is a great area! Sounds like you have things pretty well covered. I do agree strongly that as soon as you get settled you ask around about good vets. Even when you get to the hotel you will be staying at I would look up the closest emergency vet center! Keep us posted on the trip!

| I agree with the above members, I think the transition to a new home will be a easy go for your pup. Also finding a good vet is a must. Good luck on your trip.

| Thanks for the replies! Malani is far from being an angel but when it really counts, she always comes through (so far). Plans in the next couple weeks will be putting her to the test. I will be in Austin for 3 weeks before the official move. Wife and Malani are coming down to join me for a couple days in the middle.....fly with only mommy, stay in hotel for 3 nights, fly back with only mommy. Items adding to list: - 1st aid/emergency kit - mindful of hot pavement - vets in austin and along road trip Thanks! |

| Update: Malani has done very well during the move. The short round trip flight for house hunting with the wife went well. The 4 day drive from NY to Austin went very well. We arrived in Austin last Sunday and are staying in hotel until we are ready to move into house (movers showed up today with our stuff but still need to unpack and get a refridgerator, washer, dryer). I'm sure she's a bit confused but seems to be very content. Eating and potty have for the most part stayed on schedule. I'm really proud of her, she has done very well considering everything is changing and she isn't even 2 yet! We are still searching for a vet. There is a hospital in the local petsmart in case there are any emergencies. I started a thread in the local forums but seems they get little to no traffic. So, if any one in the Austin area can recommend vet and groomer it would be greatly appreciated. We will be living close to the Pflugerville/Austin border. Thanks Happy daddy Last edited by pierceme; 08-26-2015 at 10:25 AM. |

| What part of Austin are you going to be in....I will see if I can get a vet referral for you....you really do NOT want to use the vet services in PetSmart/PetCo..... We will see if we can get you hooked up with an emergency vet as well as a vet for annual/emergency care.... Welcome to Texas....I am native born, so I am a bit partial to the Great State of Texas....you are in an absolutely gorgeous part of the State.....OK....I admit, I am jealous!!! Your baby girl seems so very well behaved and seems to adjust well to her life events....speaks well to her breeding and upbringing! We do have "challenges" in our great outdoors....coyotes, hawks, owls, poisonous snakes, especially in your neck of the woods (rattlesnakes!)....be certain you do not ever let her go outside, even in a fenced in yard, in the middle of a neighborhood, unaccompanied by a human caretaker.....there are the regular precautions about thieves that steal valuable pups....just do not leave her unattended or allow people to hold her when you are out in public......that is a danger in any and all areas of the country, as people see Yorkies as "a quick buck to be made, if you can get your hands on one"..... Welcome to the Great State of Texas! You will find Austin gorgeous and the people friendly and welcoming. Just let me know where in Austin you are located so we can try to get a vet in your area! | Hi Yorkiemom Thanks for the heads up. This is the first time she gets to go outside without a leash. She almost doesn't know what to do. We never let her out of sight just for the fact she likes to taste different things, especially stuff she's not suppose to have ;-) I never thought of the "letting people hold her". Her getting snatched is always in the back of my mind. Your comment is good to keep in mind. As for Texas, I'm going to wait before I make a comment about it. Bad or good, it can't be worse than NY (not a new yorker, just lived in mid-hudson for 5-6 years. was in phx before that). Our address is in Pflugerville. We're close to the border of Pflugerville/Austin so north, north Austin. Thank you for your comments and help! |

| hi there, When I moved with my two little dogs they really freaked out once we were in our new place. However, I can suggest to you to place her in a bedroom or a room with a baby gate so she can see whats going on, and still be safe. Keep her favorite toys and a comfy blanket for her in the room. Since she is already traveled a lot this might not be a big problem for her.
