| Introducing Myself Hello, My name is Anne and on July 11th I will be bringing home my very first Yorkie. Her name is Olivia. I met her last week and fell in love. I will be visiting her tomorrow and bringing with me a little pillow I am putting together. Her breeder will let her have it with her litter mates so their scent will get on the pillow. I thought it would help to bring something home with her with that scent. I want to make things as comfortable as I can for her. I have been busy getting things that she will need. New crate, dishes, chew toys, regular toys, bedding, and I am making a crate cover for her crate too. The only thing I am having trouble with is the food. The breeder is feeding her a mix of Royal Canin Puppy and Nutri Source and giving her some Royal Canin canned puppy food in the morning. I looked at the ingredients and wasn't really impressed. I feed my other dogs (Golden Retriever and a dachshund/poodle) 4-Health dog food which according to the "Dog Food Adviser" website is a 4 star dog food. Royal Canin is a 2.5 star puppy food. I am thinking about changing my puppy to Taste of the Wild Puppy but they don't have a canned puppy food.any help would be wonderful with this subject. Nice meeting you all. Thank You Anne |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! CONGRATS on your almost-home puppy! How exciting. You sound like you've put so much great thought into preparing...that's just great, it will help more than you realize. I wouldn't change foods until after your kiddo has settled thru the stressful transition time of changing homes - it's a very vulnerable time for them and you don't want to chance anything. So, I'd feed *exactly* what the breeder is feeding for at least the first 3 weeks or so and then go from there. I feed pre-made raw - either Primal or Natures Variety, to all 4 of mine. For the 2 slightly larger ones, I also throw in just a bit of kibble - I like Natures Logic, preferably venison. I prefer grain free foods, generally, for my kiddos as I do think it's the most species appropriate. However, I also think there are tons of dogs who also do well on grain; many dogs here eat Royal Canin and do well on it, btw.

YT 1000 Club Member | I just got 2 new puppies and I wasn't all that impressed with what they were being fed but after reading on here about so many puppies getting sick after their food was changed. Talking with members who said do not change their food, it isn't worth it. I am sticking with what they are on until they are ready for adult food and then I will put them on what they are on. The royal Canin is not a bad food really. I would leave the puppy on it. No point in them refusing to eat and then you have a very sick puppy. I had a very sick puppy because my little boy puppy got into something. I personally think he got into some cat poop in the yard, and it was infected with Giardia and that is how he got it. The little stinker just finds what I call "cat truffles" and won't leave them alone and I think that is how he got sick. I would hate to have switched their food and ended up with a sick puppy. Mine is doing great now, but I am just leaving them on the the same food they were on until they are grown and then getting what I want to get for them, and my older Yorkie as well. Have fun with your new puppy! Remember that going to a new home is very stressful and switching foods only adds more stress. If you do decide to switch foods, I would wait at least 3 months, and then at that point they are only a couple months away from adult food, which is why I am sticking with what I am feeding mine until then. I took 2 puppies, so their transition was a little easier as they have each other.

| Thank You Keeping her on the same food makes sense. I will switch her when she goes to adult food. I will look again at Taste of the Wild because it is rated high and grain free. Thank you for getting back to me. I will post picks of her when she comes home. Visiting her tomorrow. I can't wait. I am bringing a cloth to hold her in so I can give something with her scent on it to my dogs at home. Trying anything I can to make all transitions as easy as possible. Thank you so much for the advice! Anne |

| I seriously don't understand when people say not to change their food. I get it they they are stressed due to changing environments, but then why add more stress by feeding them crappy food? If you eat healthy, even organic food, and one day you decided to take in a kid from the foster system and that kid only likes McDonalds, is that what you are going to continue feeding him? That is utter stupidity. My puppy came to me on Purina and he barely ate anything the first day in my house. The second day I went out and got him some healthy dog food, it's a brand called "Answers" and he chowed it down like a hungry wolf and has been eating it ever since with no fuss and he is really happy, adjusted within a week to the entire house and is so happy. If some dog got sick from changing food, that was probably because they replaced one crap food with another crap food and made everything worse. Dogs need healthy food, water, a safe place and lots of love. That's all. |
