| Professional nail trimming?? I've tried for a long time to trim Joni's nails. She fights it so much and I'm afraid I'm hurting her. That plus I don't feel I get them short enough at all. So I'm taking her to our vet today for a nail trim. They asked if I wanted clipped or dremeled. I requested dremeled although it may be even more disturbing to her. When we have professional grooms, I use a mobile groomer that I trust. But due to cost, I limit that to just once every 3 months so the nail trims are necessary in between those visits. And because I think I've been so cautionary with that groomer she doesn't trim the nails all that closely. These babies are so tiny, I just don't trust anyone not to hurt her (5 lbs)!! But I can't get it done myself. I'm kind of in a panic. Thoughts? |

| The staff at the vet's office should be able to take care of the nails. Remember, if they are overgrown it will take some time (and many frequent trims) to get them back to the correct length. A dog's nails aren't meant to be cut down all at once if they are overgrown. Keep trying at home, even if you don't actually trim the nails. Just keep trying to get your baby comfortable with having feet, paw pads, and nails touched and handled. Good luck

YT 1000 Club Member | I trim most of my dogs nails. I have 4 dogs. The puppies nails I have been doing since I brought them home. I trim just a little bit off about every 2 weeks. My big dog I have been trimming his nails for 4 years. My 9 year old Yorkie though, his nails were curled under when I got him. I started trimming just a touch off the nails the day after I brought him home. Then a little bit more a week later. A little more 2 weeks later. Then 2 weeks later I trimmed a tiny bit and got the quick on one and it scared me. I would get the bleeding stopped and hold him for an hour, set him down and we would be bleeding again. I would get the bleeding stopped, hold him and hour and then let him down and bleeding again. This went on for over 4 hours (not continuous bleeding). I finally wrapped him in a towel and went to bed and it was fine in the morning. I took him to petsmart and they dremeled his nails and they were able to get him much shorter than what I was going to be able to do in several months. I now take him in there about once a month and they are getting better and better. Once his nails are totally back to normal (if that happens) I will try trimming them again myself. I hate cutting black nails. I had a dog with white nails and I really preferred that! I would say go for the dremeling about once a month between grooms, it is worth it and the cost isn't much, at least it wasn't for Teek.

| Yes! It's those black nails! So hard to determine the quick line and between trying to aim correctly, not get the hair in the clipper, and the wiggling "let me down- let me down!!" It just unnerves me. My last dog (not a Yorkie) had 1 black nail with the rest white. I dreaded that black nail every trim and she did too! (Sophie - RIP. Cushings) |

| I just took Zoey to the vet's on mon to have her nails trimmed. It cost 21.26. Strange fee. I had found a nail that was growing in towards the paw. They did very quickly with no bleeding. The last time I trimmed (which was years ago with my Gina) I caused many to bleed. I would rather pay then to try to do it myself. Petco charges $10.00 but I had to bring in proof of rabies and bordatella before they will clip.

YT 1000 Club Member | I only had to show proof of rabies at my petsmart for them to trim Teek's nails. Once he is on file though I don't need proof until his shot runs out. Since I keep all rabies shots up to date, it is not a problem at my house. I think I paid $12 for his to be dremeled. I have thought about doing it myself, but I just have not tried it yet. I will trim and file their nails though. The puppies nails are like cats claws right now so I just use toe nail clippers on them, I tried the dog nail clippers, the scissor style, not the old guillotine style and it didn't work well. Toe nail clippers worked much easier as they are so small and thin yet (they are 15 weeks old). I have trimmed them 3 times since I brought them home 5 weeks ago. I think most places charge about $10-$12 for nail clippings. If you can't do it yourself then that is the way to go in my opinion.

| Just returned from vet - everything went well! The tech clipped then dremeled and showed me how she stopped just before the quick. She said Joni did well and cooperated calmly so that was a relief. I'll just go back every 6 wks or so to keep up with it. $22.70. I thought that was an odd amount too. Thanks Wylie's Mom. Sophie was 12 when she passed. She had excellent care from this same vets office (love my vet) and her quality of life was good until the end. CHF as well so that was as much her burden as was the Cushings. We knew when it was her time to go. |

| Walking her on concrete will help keep them worn down and it'll reduce the amount of times they have to be trimmed, but it won't suffice for occasional trims. While it might not be the best, having someone hold her or distract her with treats, toys, or food might help you get them trimmed.

| I hardly ever have to clip their nails since I walk them on concrete for their potty break a few times a day and that seems to file down their nails naturally. However, I do have a dremel and use it on them occasionally. It's not that hard as the dremel will file down the nails really fast. The 3 most important thing about using a dremel is you have to get your dog acclimated to the dremel sound, don't file too much off as it's very easy to, and file each nails for only 2 secs and alternate so it doesn't get hot and burn them. |

| Zoey is a nightmare to try to hold down and clip her nails, so I finally took her to Pet Supply Plus, where a young man did her nails. He did a fantastic job, but one groomer held her while he clipped and filed her nails. It took two people to do her......she weights 2 &1/2 pounds !!!! LOL |

| I groom myself but her nails are done professionally, usually at the vet.
