| Puppy with urinary problems? Our little Nickie seems so healthy and active but is obsessed with drinking water, he will drink till he is burping up water - and we have to dole it out to him in small amounts or he is peeing all the time. The vet is running tests - is concerned about diabetis ensipidus, liver shunt and a couple of other things that I have forgotten the name of. His urine is clear all the time and the vet says he can't retain. I have to bring in random samples tomorrow to see if he can retain at any time during the day. His urine is as clear as water. Does anyone have this problem and what were your results? I am very worried about my baby.

| Actually what you are describing is exactly to a "T" what my lil 8 month old has had. She had a UTI after being spayed. At that time the vet mentioned Liver Shunt as well...She was tested 3 times for LS, and definitely does not have it (whew!)...but she still had the UTI. She just finished the second stronger antibiotic this morning and she is much much better. She also seemed to be obssessed with water during that time, drinking way more then normal. Now after this second round of medication she's back to normal...well, whats normal for Sunni, lol. I felt so much relief after the last fasting blood work, just to be able to rule out LS. Hopefully, your pup will have the same outcome. Sunni, was going so randomly, she conveniently provided a urine sample at the vet as she was being weighed, lol. |

| Please keep us posted on lab results and vet visits.....like I had said in my other post to you, please notify your breeder....she should be interested in this baby and what is going on with him, plus she can be a great source of support and advice for you..... |

| Our vet did a blood workup and everything seemed fine - she checked urine sample but now has sent a sample out to another lab that she feels could detect infection that she might miss. We are now taking random urine samples thru out the day to see if he can retain. His urine was totally clear - but so far today I have 3 samples and do see a bit of color (not much) so must be a good sign. See what she says tomorrow a.m. She is holding a blood sample for more lab work if needed. I feel she is a good vet and will do everything she can for him. There are 3 vets at the clinic so more than one opinion I'm sure.

| Still no answers on Nickie. She has ruled out diabetes, tested for Addison's and negative on that. I think I am going to hold off on any more tests for awhile and see if it could just be a bad habit. She was going to call me on another test -water held back from him and has to be very carefully monitored - but not sure what it is for, it was the tech told me the vet would be calling me this coming week. Don't think I want to go there yet - Poor little guy has had enough blood draws for awhile. He is such a live wire - not ill in any way that we can see. Just the obsession for water.

| My advice is to take your dog to a board certified internal medicine specialist. I think the dog should have an abdominal ultrasound to take a look at the kidneys. Good luck.

YT 500 Club Member | My puppy does the same thing. He drinks his water all at once and then he burps it up. I notice when he drinks the whole bowl his urine is clear. The more they drink the clearer it will be. |
