| First heat, swollen nipples, false pregnancy, when to spay? Our Yorkie started her first heat about a week before her 1 year old birthday. She was spotting, had a very swollen vulva, etc. She started bleeding May 9th. She stooped around May 22nd (2weeks). It is now June 3rd and her vulva swelling has reduced slightly, however, the area around her nipples are hard and swollen (the size of quarters). It has only been 5-7 days after her 21 day cycle. Is this normal? Is she experiencing a false pregnancy? Will a vet be able to run tests to prove a false pregnancy? How Soon after this first heat can we get her spayed? And, if it is a false pregnancy, is it okay to spay during that time? I've seen multiple similar posts but all suggest the possibility of being pregnant with no final conclusion on whether it was actual false, true, or normal in the end. |

| If there's no possibility of her being pregnant they should go back down within a few weeks after a full heat cycle....which I believe is close to two months. Most vets won't or shouldn't spay while in active heat because everything is swollen and more likely to bleed during surgery. If you aren't planning to breed her the less heat cycles she goes through the better. Sounds like she may have a little bit of time til her full cycle is over so I would schedule a spay for maybe mid july?

YT Addict | Tink had a false pregnancy (I NOW know to spay ASAP... I was 16 when I got her) when she was younger . The first thing I noticed was she was acting strangely with her toys. She had a Care Bear she carried around everywhere, then would proceed to lay it down, then try to "nurse" it. No joke. She acted like the bear was her baby and was protective of it. She then began to wrangle ALL her toys into her bed to "nurse" This was a little after her being heat. Maybe a week later, I noticed she was producing milk, which led us to the vet where they said she was experiencing a false pregnancy (which I had never even known or heard of). She had a mild case of mastitis, so keep a lookout for that - darker liquid in the nipples which she received anti-biotics for. I'm not sure how long they waited to spay, but I do remembering them waiting a little bit... I'm sure your vet will have a good idea of when it is ok to spay. Hope this helps. |
