Irregular heartbeat Hello everyone!! My little Yorkie, Puddin (7), has an irregular heart beat and I'm curious about her future treatment. I know I'm eventually going to have to put her on heart pills of some kind...she doesn't have any symptoms now. Does anybody have any experience with this? I also want to put her on heartworm prevention (they've gotten really bad in my area) and I was curious how that would work with her heart/pills? What heartworm prevention do you guys use? She has the seresto flea collar so she doesn't need that. Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . What is the heart issue that she has? Does she have CHF (congestive heart failure) or pre-CHF, a heart murmur, or some other arryhthmia? My Wylie has moderate CHF and is on Enalapril for it, and has no side effects. For heartworm, I use Heartguard for all 4 of mine.

Well from what my vet said it is an arrhythmia..it skips beats. He ask me if she gets fatigued or coughs...she coughs some like the reverse sneeze thing but not bad. She does have blood sugar problems sometimes (stress related) and I wonder if that is actually caused by her heart. I was thinking about putting her on heartgard. I'm glad to hear it works for you!

I would see a cardiologist before I started to medically manage your dog. An irregular heartbeat, depending on where the irregularity is being generated from, can be normal for a dog. A "regular irregularity" is common in dogs and no need for concern unless it becomes symptomatic. "Dogs don't have a regular heartbeat as humans do..This is a helpful site> http://www.petsdoc.com/html/askthevet/as... Irregular heart beats are common, and usually not a problem unless associated with other cardiac related clinical signs. The most common origin is sinus arrhythmia, an irregularity in the pacemaker of the heart. If your dog is otherwise fine, you do not need to worry about the irregular heart beat." As for heartworm meds, in Texas if your dog is outside for a season without heartworm preventative, chances are excellent the pet will have heartworms. Hopefully, at your pets age, she has been on heartworm preventative.....the vet will check her before starting anything for heartworms. Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 05-31-2015 at 07:58 AM.

Heart I just asked our vet about this last week and he said that arrithmia is very common and no need to worry unless she displays other problems. She is 5 months old.

Yep that's what I thought...he told me not to worry about it until she had symptoms but I was just curious for the future.

That's reassuring...it is kinda scary though! I took her to get her teeth cleaned and I was so worried about my little girl!! She didn't have it when she was younger...it developed a few years ago.

I had her on trifexis but I'm looking for something different. |

I am glad she has already been on something for heartworms.....I am also glad you are looking for something different than Trifexis.....my vet wont even give it to small dogs, because of documented side effects. She may NEVER have any symptoms from her irreular heartbeat!! But it is good to get your thoughts and a plan of action/direction for the future, just in case! Then you are not caught flat footed, unaware and terrified!

Heartworm med. in TX They have Bella on Revolution (selamectin) for Heartworm, ticks, fleas, mange. It's for puppies under 5 lb. I don't know much about all of that but she has had no adverse effects when I administer it once a month.

I have used Revolution for years and love it....just be sure you part the hair and get that drop of medicine DIRECTLY onto the skin....sometimes people get in a hurry and dont take the time to get it applied directly onto the skin, and then the dog comes down with heartworms and they blame the med for not working! I send all my babies to new homes started on Revolution.
