| My poor baby Hello All, Joined not long ago, just want to let you all know about what happened to my only 5 month old Yorkie, Zeus. Last night he was running around the backyard really fast, I was getting read to go inside and he came running after me. He undershot the patio ledge (it is about 5 inches off the ground) and ran full force into it, breaking his front elbow. I have never heard a dog scream and cry in that way. It was just awful. I picked him up right away and took him straight to the vet. In hindsight, I should've just taken him to the emergency, but I thought my vet had the emergency services (I didn't realize that they didn't). I could've at least saved myself the cost for that visit and xrays there, since I had to do it again at the emergency. He is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning (was supposed to be this afternoon but they got in another emergency that was more of an urgency ). I can't even describe how awful it was to see him in that pain, and to even see him now. He is completely doped up and is nothing like the little puppy that he is. It was also a hard decision to make - yes, I understand he's our family, but it's still a lot of money, and no we won't be going with pet insurance as we don't feel it's for us - but ultimately, he's our family and we're going ahead with the procedure. If anyone is curious, when it's all said and done, surgery, tests, overnight stay etc will amount to $5,500 or so. I am hoping he has a fast recovery and that he does recover. |

| Thank you for sharing your story with us. I hope your little one improves soon and I am so sorry that he had to have this tragic accident. He must have been in an awful lot of pain from your description of the incident. Please let us know how things work out for little Zeus. Such a young age for this to happen to him. Just a baby. |

Thank you. Yes, it was really awful. We all cried. You're exactly right, he's just a baby and it makes it that much worse. And having him in the hospital makes me sick thinking about it, does he think we abandoned him? I just want him better and back to his hyper self. | |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I'm sorry to hear about Zeus...I had a similar incident happen many years ago with one of my Min Pins. Everything turned out great and she regained full mobility. It did take about 8 weeks for her to fully recover from the surgery. I hope that yours turns out as well. |

| Your furbaby will be back to bouncing in no time! It's a scary experience having to rush a baby like ours to the hospital. Then the bills.... Maybe you can get funding through donations. When my Bijou got himself sick and in a bad way suddenly, we went through a program in Louisiana that helps cover the cost of his hospital stay tests meds and later his sleep shot and cremation. They even got the urn. Since then I didn't own a dog for many years. Till last year anyway.... And I'm a nervous wreck with this guy. Want to make it right by my Bijou and by this little tyke. ...... Really went off the beaten path on that one, my point is; there are organizations that help with emergency vetting. Check into it, might help alleviate some stress. P.s. Good luck with crate resting him at that age, it's gonna be rough but don't give in. You want him back to his bouncing self when he's healed.

| Trust in your vet, say a prayer, and remember to take of yourself so you can be there for your little guy. Babies, in general, are pretty resilient and that, combined with your care and love will serve him in good stead. You'll all recover in no time, I'm sure! All the very best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to your Zeus |

| Thanks everyone. He is out of surgery and awake. They said he's doing very well and can see mobility in his leg which is a good sign. He experienced bouts of vomiting before an dafter the procedure, but they said it's not uncommon and are giving him something for it. We are not allowed to visit on the day of the surgery, so I won't be able to see him until we pick him up tomorrow. They put a pin in his bone, that was able to be guided with a camera so the surgery wasn't too invasive. He will need plenty of rest for 3-4 weeks as he heals. Which for him, who had the run of house (he was pretty much 99% potty trained), is going to be tough. Picking up a crate from a friend tonight to keep him in. It's going to be so sad to confine him to it but it's for his own good so I'll just have to not feel guilty about it. Thank you for your kinds words. I'll keep you updated when he comes home. |
