YT 500 Club Member | Should I Withhold Food So since yesterday morning Sammie has had excessive stool and at the end it is loose. He does not have full diarhea. Just lots of stool and then the last two are real soft. In one sitting he could have 6 stools. Should I withhold food? He is not acting sick and wants to eat. Thanks |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Personally, I never withhold food, even w/ GI upsets...bc it always seems to be a dog's tummy tends to know whether or not it feels like eating. I'd still feed if it were me.

| I would feed her maybe go to rice and boiled chicken. These little guys can go down fast maybe a trip to the vet? They also say pumpkin can help bring the stood back to normal. Hope your baby feels better soon. |

| I wouldn't withhold food. You can add about a tbs of canned pumpkin to his food but if he's not better by tomorrow morning I would be calling the vet for an appointment. If you haven't changed anything in the past few day (you said 2 weeks ago with a food change) having a change in poop habits would be of concern. If you are going to try adding a little pumpkin it needs to be Canned PACKED Pumpkin. Not the type that is for pie filling. It's pretty cheap around $2 for a can and you can always freeze any left overs for use later.

| My vet also recommends with holding food when we have issues. As long as mine is drinking he wants the tummy to "rest". Then we do a bland chicken rice diet.

| If it was me, and there is no reason, no currant food change over, nothing new like treats were given I would be at my vet with pup. But that is just me. You can try boiled boneless chicken cutlets mixed in with boiled rice. this will bind his stools (hopefully) I would NOT with hold food. I have not had the need to use the pumpkin, but members that advise it do so because they have. What ever you choose, if your baby still has loose poop, I would take a sample of the poop and get pup to vet ASAP.

| The reason I withhold a meal when a dog is sick is because continuing to feed if the dog has a problem such as pancreatitis will make it worse. I find that chicken and rice doesn't always cure diarrhea, and higher fiber can be better (ie sweet potato). I don't run to the vet over one loose stool if my dog is acting fine. I just skip a meal and things usually resolve quickly.

| Boiled rice has no fiber in it at all, unless its brown rice. |

| I think I would bring a stool sample in and also ask your vet. Susan |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | How's he doing today and what was he eating before. I probably wouldn't withhold food unless my vet told me too. The only real symptom is a little soft and that could be normal. Are you feeding things besides dog food? Excessive stool can mean there's something in the food that he can't digest, not always a bad thing, but you should be aware of this. For example, if you gave him a bunch of green beans this could happen.

YT 500 Club Member | I did not withhold food. He did not get any treats the last few days. Last night still a little soft and now today he has not gone yet. So I am giving him some pumpkin and see if that helps. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Have you recently done a food change and could he be getting some food that you don't know about?
