Evey thing is in baby steps, if she prefers grass, then grass it will be, she needs to get use to the leash and walks, most dogs prefer grass, I think in time when she is use to leash walking she will walk on cement. Feed her the same time every morning and same time every night she needs a schedule , 20 to 30 minutes after she eats harness her up and walk her, if she is using pee pads and makes on the pad before you can get her out, walk her anyway,( that is if you are trying to house break her ) some dogs will need to pee or poo before 20 or 30 minutes, Cody will potty 5 to 10 minutes after he eats, you will find what her time is. If you see she pottied before the 20 to 30 minutes, take her out 10 to 15 minutes after she eats, my passed girls were taken out 30 minutes after eating, all dogs are diff. but you have to be consistent in the feed and walk times. You have much to learn about her, and she has much to learn about you, her new daddy, patience, consistency, PRAISE and love, it will all come together. I wanted to also mention playing and toys, 99% of dogs LOVE balls, don't think it odd if your baby is not interested in balls, my Cody does not like balls lol. I started the chase game to get him into a play mode the "I'm gonna get you game".Cody was raised / trained to be a little gentleman, I am retraining him to be the yorkie he should be lol, playful and and fearless, we are both having fun with his new way of living. I also changed Cody's name when I adopted him, in 3 days he was answering to his new name. Please keep us updated, we LOVE to hear about a rescue's progress, and, thank you for giving this little girl a home, BTW, she is just adorable.

This sounds just like our Yorkie when we adopted him around the same age. He even lived with an old woman who seems to have done very little with him. When we got him, he was a bump on a long. Give them 6 months and you will maybe sometimes wish you had the old, quiet, boring puppy! I agree with others that they just need to acclimate and make up their mind that they are in their new home and with their new owner. Good luck.

I am glad mine came around so quickly. I do agree though, she just needs time. Mine didn't play with toys when I got him. He could barely walk up the street. Now he plays and we have fun and he has such an awesome personality. He also will be going hiking as he has just gotten in so much better shape. She is much younger than my 9 year old so I suspect she will physically bounce back faster than mine.

Congrats! She sounds like a sweetie pie! My Maggie has never shown an interest in toys. Zero. Zilch. Nada. She will sometimes chew on a bully stick but even thats hit or miss. So this might just be your pups personality too. As for walks, when I brought Maggie home she was 4 and refused to walk on a leash. Just plopped her butt down and refused. But now she walks like a champ! For several months I carried her around the block to learn the sights, smells, sounds - and then sometimes I would put her down to sniff. Eventually she started walking on the leash because she was sniffing her way down the side walk. It took a long time, and is probably what i work on the hardest with her.

But at the end of the day if your pup uses the pee pads, is a healthy weight, and seems content, then I think thats ok. You have given her a nice safe home and good life

Update: Gabby is doing very well! She barked for the first time since brining her home a week ago today. She is doing much better walking on the leash. She will now walk (very slowly!) down the street a few blocks and back. She also loves her kong that I will fill with a treat or two every day.

yay for Gabby, great to hear she is getting settled in, sweet little girl. This is a new life style for her, she is young and easily trainable. Keep up the good work dad, and please keep us up-dated. Gabby is just adorable.

It sounds like you are earning her trust. Soon she will have you wrapped around her little paw!

She will keep changing and getting more comfortable for months. Teek has been with me almost 4 months and still changes, mostly for the better.

It will take time to adjust and just be patient and keep doing what you are doing because it sounds like she is doing wonderful!
