| Question about coat. Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and have a couple questions. I have a Yorkie and a couple weeks ago I got a new boy, my boy and this new one have completely different coats although both were and are fed the same royal canin food. The boy I got has an extremely shiny coat while my boys coat looks dry and stringy. What would you recommend I use for the coat? A certain shampoo or change of food? They are very picky. I put omega 3 in the food for my boy always but coat doesn't look healthy. Also what do you guys use for the top knot? I use the tiny rubber bands and I'm breaking the hair in that little area looks horrible when it comes off. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, never had yorkies before and in 4 short months I have 2!! |

YT 500 Club Member | I use the same rubber bands. I don't do them too tight, just tight enough to stay on, and I don't split and pull , I roll them down if need be. Then I take one and pull it farther towards the top so it holds the hair closer to her head instead of. The air and it seems to stay nicer longer. Also when I take them out I don't bother pulling it out. I just use nail clippers and clip two pieces and then spread the hair out so it brushes out easir with less damage. Hope that helps and wasn't too confusing. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | There is not much you can do to change the texture of hair as it's genetic. I would suggest oil, but you're already using. You may want to use coconut oil too - both internally and on the coat. For top knots, I use tiny hair claw clips.

Thank you and yes I agree. Going to put the coconut oil in hair not only in food. Do you melt it before applying to hair? Hair claw clips are a good idea, avoids all damage (although mines are probably too crazy to keep on LOL)

| I followed Wylie's Mom suggestion with the tiny hair claws as keeping rubber bands in was not working out. I am trying to grow out Cody's hair for a top knot. The tiny claws are perfect, even after a wild day of hunting critters, he sticks his head in all crevices and that claw is still there and no hair damage.

| Hair claws are IDEAL if you can get them to stay in.. If not, I use loom bands because you can get like a million for $2. They do not break the hair and are easy to remove. They do break when I remove them, but for the price, I could break one a day and have a years supply at $2. You absolutely MUST, however, ensure that your dog does not ingest them. Like other hair bows and bands, these can get wrapped around the intestines of the dog if ingested. SO, hair claws sound like a great idea and move on to bands if the claws aren't suitable. Teddy would grind his head in the carpet with claws, cuz I think he felt the weight of them, but loom bands he loves and waits for me to put them in each morning. Good luck! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You don't have to melt it or anything...I'd just put a bit (start small) in your hands...rub your hands together to spread it around, then rub into skin/hair and go from there.

Thanks so much and yes that's so true need to be so careful they don't ingest them. When I got my second little boy the minute he pooped outside the airport I saw bands all over his poop! Seems like he got into a box of them, I rushed him to the vet and nearly had a heart attack but they said if hes passing them along fine to leave him alone and he did 2 days later no more. Hes just a little dare devil even here I had to pull a penny out of his tiny mouth!

| Welcome to yorkie talk and congratulations on your new boys We also use royal canin, we use the mini kibble. After some debate about what fish oil we were going to choose, we went based on Ann's suggestion (Wylie's mom) with royal express omega mender itch ender by ark naturals. Lilah has never had dry, itchy skin (thank goodness) but the product is a fish oil balanced with vitamin e and includes borage. I liked the vitamin e balance and am a fan of ark naturals products, lilah seems to enjoy the oil and I put some on top of her canned rc mini food she has in the morning. We recently decided to add 1/4 tsp coconut oil to the regimine but so far Lilah does not seem to like it we have used it on the coat before and I think Lilah would benefit from a once monthly pre bath coconut oil conditioning. We have always used bands and we do have a band clipper tool but the silicone bands seem to slip off easily before I even get a chance to cut them without damaging the hair. We are growing out our top knot hair again with some notable wispys but it is from me not doing a good enough job with face washing and brushing for a period of time a few months ago. We use espree plum perfect face wash and I try to do it every day. We have been on a roll with our daily grooming for a few months and I am pretty pleased about it. Face washing is key. Jenny from top line pet (mimomimo YT member) has a great shop with grooming supplies, I recently purchased some claw clips and am going to give them a go but I like bows a lot and it seems difficult to highlight them without a band. I also really like her soft toddler style bands. toplinepet.com Never brush a dry coat, it will cause breakage, use a conditioning spray. Wash and condition approx every four days, brush daily with a pin brush, steel combs are amazing and wonderful. Keep those faces clean Can't wait to see pics of the boys!
