| Help!!! Let me start by saying I already feel absolutely terrible and like a bad Dad, so please support only here. Bella just turned 7 months old, I live in upstate NY it is just starting to get warm up here and I started thinking that I need to get her started on flea and tick meds. So yesterday I was on yorkietalk researching what to give her and decided on Revolution cause I haven't started her on heartworm either. I didn't realize that she should have been on this stuff already!!! Anyway I ordered revolution yesterday. Bella and I do trail running together, she absolutely loves it and so do I, not thinking anything about having this young pup out in the woods with me for 45 mins 3 days a week with no protection. Sure enough this morning I found a tick on her neck, I tried to take it off as per internet instruction but that thing was on there and I am not sure I got all of it. I did wipe it down after with alcohol. I feel awful and am worried about her. Please what should I do? Do you think I should take her to vets, or just watch her for a few days? Any advice will be so welcome. I really try to be a good Dad, but I feel I screwed up on this one, I hope she doesn't suffer for my bad. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | If you have a magnifying glass, check to see if you removed the head. If you can't tell, or you see that the head was retained, take her to the vet to have it looked at. I would then look up what to look for in tick related diseases. I believe that Lyme disease rates are high in your area and if the tick was difficult to get off, then it was most likely on your dog long enough to transmit infection if it was a diseased tick. If you still have the tick, it helps the vet to know what kind of tick it was since it is the deer tick that carries Lyme disease and others can cause other illnesses. |

| First of all, please don't beat yourself up! We all make mistakes, and of course you never meant any harm. Ticks are a huge issue here in NJ as well. I did almost the opposite of what you did, and think I caused a problem for my 5 month old puppy. I gave her the heart worm and flea&tick medicine at the same time…Two days later I was at the vet, because she was pretty sick, with tremors etc. You should call the vet and ask if you should bring her in. The sooner they can catch lymes, the more likely they can manage it. I know sometimes after removing ticks, the area will swell on a dog, so it makes it hard to know if its all out or not. Truthfully, if in doubt I always go to the vet. I have my own chair there now, lol. I've been there so much with my puppy. Good luck!! I'm sure she's fine, and probably loves your hikes as much as you do |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Don't get down on yourself, okay? Gosh, we've *all*, every single one of us, made mistakes w/ our kiddos! It happens to all of us...we're only mere humans, caring for these little gods, I mean dogs . I would check the area thoroughly to make sure you got it all. I'd probably also call your vet and ask to speak to a tech to run by them what happened and ask if they can check w/ a vet.

| Thank you everyone for all your support. I did end up calling the vets office and speaking with a tech. He told me to keep watch of the area the next few days to be sure it doesn't get infected. He said that if there is any of the tick left in there it should work its way out but may take a few weeks to do so. As long as it doesn't get infected, she doesn't start running a fever than she will be fine. So I will watch the little one for the next few days for signs of a fever and get her flea and tick and heartworm meds on her as quickly as possible. Thank you all again, I love this forum!!!! |

| I just wanted to suggest that everyone check manually from time to time. Even though you use flea/tick, it doesn't work 100% sometimes. I use Advantix II and I have neighbors that uses other brands. We ALL found a tick on our furbutts at one point or another. I make it a point to run my fingers through their bodies at least once a day during spring/fall/summer. Don't forget between the toes and crevices around their legs. There were couple times where I found ticks in places I'd never imagine. -_- |
