Perhaps this has already been posted about but particularly as this is a Chicago issue currently and I am Oregon I only just heard about it. Sounds like there is a very contagious strain of canine flue affecting many dogs in the Chicago area- anyone from around there on dog stroll lockdown? Or is there any news of this illness being found in other areas of the country right now? It sounds like at this point there have 'only' been five deaths but that at least 1,000 cases have been reported and it does not appear to be slowing down

Interesting. Sunday evening Jackson, my maltese, started coughing. He coughed a lot during the night. It didn't sound sound like kennel cough. He coughed some on Monday and during the night Zoey started coughing. Tuesday neither coughed and there has been no coughing today. They have not been anywhere for weeks except my fenced in backyard. No fevers nor runny noses or eyes. Appetite is same. I thought maybe it was allergies. Still watching them carefully.

I wonder if it's possible to develop a "flu-like" shot for animals...? Especially as it's so contagious. Thanks for the "heads-up" (as they say)!

It seems to be spreading. Scary.

Our local dog park, and vet pages, are starting to see an increase in dogs with flu symptoms. I'm only letting ZoE run around in her own yard, and while I take her for a ride in the car to drivethrus, I won't take her to the petstores and pet friendly stores around town. It's just not worth the risk.

I hope everybody's baby stays well. I do not mean to down play the tragedy of the dogs who passed but five is a small number compared to the reports of the illness so I suppose with appropriate hydration it is probably not a serious affliction for the typical dog (not an elderly or a pup or a health compromised dog). Scary though!

I'm near Chicago and it is an epidemic. Plus it is spreading beyond the Chicago metro area. Many day care and such in the city have closed for a day or two to clean. Many vets won't let you bring your sick dog with flu symptoms, choosing to do the first exam in the parking lot. I guess it is very contagious.

There is a vaccine. It is two shots a month apart. I took my Pepper on Tuesday for the first shot. The vet says there is a big demand for the virus. His office only had enough for the appointments that day. I wasn't sure I wanted to get it as I really don't frequent dog parks, etc. But the vet said the bigger risk is at the groomer.

There is a canine influenza vaccine. I don't know anything about it, though.

Wow, thank you very much for really helpful information. I'm a firm believer in the ol' ounce of prevention method and will check with both my vet and groomer insofar as what/if anything is happening in Sparks. Thanks again; I learn of things on YF that I don't hear of anywhere else---or at least not in such a timely fashion...How wonderful that we can trust and look out for one another in this way!

I had to board my two tinies for one day last January. They needed their Bordetella vaccine. When I called my vet to get an appointment I was asked if the place I was boarding them required a flu vaccine. I called and they did require it. It was the first time I had heard of this, but both dogs received a canine influenza vaccine. Now I am hearing it more and more and can be fatal. Glad I did it in December. Scary.

Hi again. I just checked my records and the cost for the canine influenza vaccine was $25 for anyone interested. Might be different in other areas.

Yikes! I don't feel like we are as out and about or as social as we ought to be sometimes but I aspire to be one day and here I didn't even know about the canine flu vaccine! I work in a very public place where dogs come in and I am sure I could track it in on my shoes. I should call my vet and inquire about their recommendations for our area at this time. Oregon (especially Portland) is big on importing rescue dogs from other areas too so even if it isn't here yet I bet it will be soon!

This is really scary. thanks for posting and information. We will be going to MI for several months and will be about 3 hours from Chicago. I will be visiting DD in Chicago (without taking Dinky) and vice versa. I am going to have to read about transmission.
