| dissapointed in vet boarding This July we are going on vacation for just a couple days and I planned on leaving my pups at my vet's boarding since I really like my vet and trust them. Yesterday when I took them in for their heartworm test I decided to get a tour of the boarding area. The boarding area was small (I live in a small town), but was clean. The first issue I had was there was no size option. The small dogs staying the small kennel and large dogs in the large kennel. I would have liked to have an option to pay more for a larger kennel. I didn't prefer it, but I could live with this. The deal breaker was when she told me they only let the dogs out for potty breaks/play time 3 or 4 times a day! There is no way my pups, who are used to going out as needed would be able to handle this. They would soil their small living area multiple times a day/night. When I got home I wanted to cry thinking about leaving them there. Being a small town there are no other options here. Luckily, I thought of another option. We are driving 3 hours to the Wisconsin Dells for our vacation and I was able to find boarding there, with several size options, and exit run for $2 extra, and they let the dogs out every 1 1/2 hours and even have someone drop by at night to let them out if needed. It's a little more expensive than my vet, but well worth not having to feel the guilt of leaving them in a kennel only to be let out 2 times a day! I am still nervous about leaving them for even this short amount of time, but at least they will not be far from us! |

| Glad you found an alternative! I too looked into my vets (whom I love) to board Wall-e. Deal breaker was that no one was there on Sundays, they only came twice to let them potty. That sounded like torture for my little guy.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It's SO hard to leave these babies, even in the very best of care. Heck, I hate leaving them even when someone comes to the house to stay with them ! So I totally feel your pain. It will alll be okay, though, rest assured...it really will!

| I would consider a sitter. We went on vacation years for nine days and left our two Shih Tzus in the care of a neighbor boy. He came and fed and watered them everyday. I found out that another neighbor saw him in our back yard and called the police. Poor kid was scared to death when two cops with guns drawn walked into our backyard. We did this twice but I would be more concerned with a yorkie. I think I would opt for an adult pet sitter that came everyday. Many are bonded.

| Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I did look into a pet sitter. There is one in my area that comes highly recommended, but it would be way too expensive for the amount of times I would want her to come by the house. I just wish Lexi and Parker were pad trained, then a pet sitter would be a better option. I actually bought 2 large fake grass potty pads to put in the area they stay while we are out of the house, but they will not use them. The one time we were gone for 5 hours I realized that Lexi peed in her crate. I'm glad she didn't pee on the floor, but I was hoping they would use the grass pads if they really needed to go. We are planning on getting to the Dells around 4:00pm, drop them off at the boarder, the next day they will be there all day, and then the following day pick them up at about 11:00am. So they will only be there one full day. I'm just nervous having never seen the place before. I am going off of google reviews, their website, and what they have told me over the phone. DBlain - That would be a great idea, but our hotel does not allow pets. For our next vacation that might be something to look into. |

| I miss my GA vet because they were open 7 days a week and had someone stay with the dogs at night. And it was much more reasonably priced. Our new vet is a little more pricey and they have the same options as your vet. We boarded Emma a few weeks ago for 2 days. She went in freshly groomed and came back smelling and looking crazy. For this reason I typically try to travel with her. Glad you were able to find an alternative.

| As much as I love my vet, I would not board there. They simply are not set up for that business....their business is for sick animals. I rarely go anywhere but, when I must, my pups are in their home with someone I trust. Glad you found an option .. hope it works out well.

| Several years ago I considered boarding my pets at the local veterinary clinic because I also thought it would be a great idea. I also found the boarding conditions to be substandard. Small cages were all that were provided for the dogs. Even the larger dogs were allowed only cramped living conditions. I don't know what their thinking is but many pet owners do not want to think of their pet squeezed into a tiny cage while the family is off on vacation. Sounds like you found a great alternative. There are many places that cater to pets these days. it is important to check them out carefully. I am so glad that smart business people are coming up with ways to coddle our pets for us when we have to be away. |

| I found a website that lists pet friendly accomodations when we travel. I won't post the link because I am not sure it is allowed but I just can't see myself leaving Max in a boarding place for any amount of time. It is probably silly to think this way but I feel like no one else knows how to look after him the right way. |
