YT 500 Club Member | Good grief, Charlie Brown ... So today while Toby and izzy were tethered outside on the porch ( they like to lay in the sun and the enclosure I built sits in the shade so we compromised on a tethering with a baby monitor camera on them at all times) the neighbor walked by and Toby was barking as usual at anything that moves, and the neighbor said hi to izzy and pet her head, and said hi to Toby, and then Toby bit him on the ankle . Hard. Broke the skin and caused it to bleed. He didn't say anything to us right off but it was mentioned to my boyfriend. I didn't actually see that part , but I know right when it happened cause I saw him walking past. So now that stresses me cause if he bites the wrong person they can make me put him down. So I guess I need to cut him off from his sunbathing unless I'm right there beside him and after we move I'm going to have to find a good trainer to work with him on that. He's never done that before. He's always the frantic happy spaz when people approach. Well, most people. He's never been like that with anyone he's familiar with though. And he's familiar with the neighbor so I don't get it. I've never had a dog behave like that before. But then, Toby has given me a long list of firsts and never befores since his arrival. You know that curse every mother puts on their kid about hoping that their children are as bad or worse than they are so they have to go through hell too? I thought having a hysterectomy before having a kid would exclude me from that curse. But then I got Toby. Toby the Tyrant. And yes he is. Lol |

| I'm sure he was scared for whatever reason. Sorry that happened to your neighbor. It does sound like you are going to have to be with them outside and ask people not to pet Toby. Our Vivi bit someone at Halloween one time and now we put her in the crate around company. I don't want to set her up for failure again. If I had more time I would work with a dog trainer, but since time is limited it is important that this never happen again. Still love her though.

| It seems like it was the neighbors fault though, in all fairness to the pup. You had her tethered on your property and he approached her. I'm not saying its ok that she bit him, but he invaded her safe space, and if you weren't there to make her feel safe, she may have felt scared. I found a funny sign that I put on the outside of my deck, which is completely enclosed with a gate..so unless someone is trespassing they are warned. It says ankle biters on guard..I wrote on it, please don't approach or pet the dogs, without the owner present. I've never had a problem. People probably think I'm overcautious, but thats not my problem, lol. Good luck!! I've started puppy training with my little girl and so far its great. Its just a group class but its good for her to be around other puppies and people that she doesn't know. Naturally, she's the least timid of all, haha. She goes up to everyone as if she expects them to adore her, like mommy does. |

I agree! Unless your bf told your neighbor it was ok for him to pet Toby, I don't see how it's his fault. Your neighbor should have asked permission before approaching. From now on until you figure out why Toby bit, I wouldn't let people pet him unless they live in your household or he interacts with them frequently. Even with the latter, I'd have Toby approach them first so he can be petted. Some dogs just don't like to be petted by anyone, but their owners *shrug*. My yorkie, Rasta, doesn't like anyone petting him but my husband and myself. It's just his personality, he has bit people when they invade his space after he's given them a warning growl. It's my responsibility to either remove him to another room or tell people not to touch him. | |

| Omitting the biting, Toby sounds like my type of yorkie lol, my Matese was into all sorts of mischief, I have always said, if Matese was my first yorkie she would have been my last lol, but I loved her the best, she chewed carpets, wall moldings in my new home, dining room table and chair legs, anything she found on the ground was in her mouth, she was 5 to 9 years old when she did these things, very defiant but a beautiful fun loving entertaining lil girl and I miss her to this day. I LOVE feisty lil yorkies, even tho they can be a challenge. Cody is dull compared to my Matese and my 3 other passed girls. Not that I am complaining about Cody's calm ways lol, his prev. owner trained him well lol, 95% good behavior and manners. 17 months and I am still finding new things out about him lol.

| This is why I always asked before just blindly petting other people's dogs. You don't know the temperament of the dog so it is always better to ask first. |

| Baby monitor or not they should not be out there by themselves. What if someone wanted to steal them? What if a bigger aggressive dog came up?

YT 500 Club Member | Well, most people don't dare approach and I've yet to have any dogs attempt either due to the fact that Coco is always out there with them. She's a massive blue pit bull who scares the hell out of people . And she's fiercely protective of my terrorists. Izzy hides underneath her when she gets scared, and she just lays there and grins as toby bounces on her head. But unless you know her, you'd be scared to approach her for sure. |
