| Grooming Help needed I have the most precious Yorkie male. My problem is my Yorkie hates the scissors. I can't cut the hair on his face to keep it out of his eyes. He wriggles like mad and flicks and shakes his head. He does snap a little bit too, but not to bite, he is so adorable and gentle. I have tried holding my hand over his eyes and having a friend to help hold him, but as soon as hear hears / senses the scissors he becomes a super fast wriggle machine. I don't want to take him to a doggy parlour as I don't want to traumatise him or risk anyone damaging his eyes. Any help or suggestions will be welcome. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! I would def used a blunted / rounded scissors...that will help. Try having the friend wrap him tight in a towel and then cradle him, belly up, in her arms while you cut. I personally don't believe in cutting the hair around the eyes as I believe it can make things worse, but some people do like to cut it.

| Agree with WyliesMom. I don't cut the hair around the eyes - it makes it worse as it grows out and "pokes" in their eyes. I let it grow and then it goes into the top knot nicely with no "pokies". That being said, I know many that do.

| I keep them trimmed. The only thing about that is as others pointed out, it can poke their eyes. But I keep them trimmed often so that's not really an issue for me. Both mine are always in puppy cuts and they hate top knots so this seemed to be the best option for me. Have you tried using treats? Reintroducing him to the scissor slowly with treats by just showing him the scissor and give a treat to gradually touching him with the scissor and giving him a treat. I think trying to "force" the scissor on him might be making it worse. Both mine were resistant to anything that had to do with grooming but after some time and LOTS of treats, they're pretty good now. |

| I would try only trimming when the pup is literally exhausted, has been fed and walked and tired out. I wouldn't have anyone else hold her because that probably adds to the fear. I actually have the scissors and things I need set up on the table by where I sit, and after all that, when she's starting to snuggle beside me, I start combing her and will trim around her bottom if necessary.. I try to make it super relaxing. I had taken mine for a puppy groom, but I only wanted her bathed and her nails cut. I just can't cut dogs nails!! I'll clean poop, trim, etc..but nails scare me to death. Anyway, the groomer cut all the hair off her face and ears. So now I'm actually trying to let it grow and keep it in a top knot. I've read so many things that say thats actually the best way to keep the hair out of the eyes. If I'm wrong, I'm sure more experienced people can correct me. I think with the hair off her face and ears is what makes her look more like a yorkie/silky right now. Time will tell, lol |

| Thanks for all the tips and advice. My Mackenzie hates a top knot and won't allow me to put one in. I have tried waiting until he is asleep after a good walk and meal. I managed to do that once and now he is wise to it. I just want to clear the hair going across the front of his eyes. I have tried treats, to no avail. He is so fast and shakes his head. I will keep trying with the treats. |

YT 500 Club Member | Make it a point to play with that area where you put the top knot a lot so they get used to it. When they're snuggled up to you just gently absently grab the hair and softly twist it together and then let it go over and over so they get used to it. That's what I did with izzy. And now she tolerates it much better. |

| Thank you he won't tolerate the hair claws either. I will try playing with his fringe more and see if I can get him to stay calm. |

| Our thinking was that for Dinky the groomer was safer. He would hold still for anything except the face. Still, I understand about not using a groomer. Can you just click the clippers without cutting until he gets more used to the sound? |
