How do you potty train a stubborn yorkie? I really need help. I have tried everything to potty train my baby, Little Miss Elliot. She is 4 months old and I have been potty training her for almost two months (I got her at 8 weeks old). She is getting worse the older she gets. I have tried every method of potty training that I have read/heard about. I have asked the trainer at puppy classes to help and he doesn't know what else to suggest. First off, Elliot goes constantly in her crate. I rarely take her out when her blanket is dry. It doesn't matter if she is in there an hour or 3 hours, even if I took her out right before I put her in the crate. I have tried the bell method. I have kept schedules (for her and me). I tried tying her to me to catch her. I take her out every hour. Nothing works. I tried every method for a couple of weeks to see if it would have any impact. We go outside and Elliot will sometimes go, sometime not, even if we are out there 10 - 15 minutes (most of the time we are out there 10 minutes). We come in and yep, within 5 minutes there will be a puddle or a present somewhere on the floor. Like tonight, we were outside for 10 minutes. Her older sister went, she didn't. We came in and while I was in the kitchen, Elliot went in the living room and had a bowel movement on the floor. I showed it to her immediately, said no, took her to the back door, said "out" and rang the bell. I then sat her on the back porch for 30 seconds for a time out (I only do this if I catch her going immediately). And Elliot knows she is doing it because the past few days after she goes, she will either run under the dining room table (I have to get on the floor to get her out of there) or she goes onto the sofa and hides in the corner under the pillows (like she did tonight). Her brother, Duncan, is 2 months older than Elliot is and he is almost finished potty training (I tried the bell method with him too but it didn't work either. He just sits at the back door and waits for me to take him out when he has to go, he won't ring the bell either). I thought that if Elliot went out every time Duncan and her older sister went out, she would go too. But no, she doesn't. I know she was young when I got her so I thought it would take longer to train her but I don't know what else to do to get her potty trained. What is really bothering me is that now she seems to know what she is doing since she is hiding after doing it. Does anyone have any other suggestions or has anyone else had this problem? I haven't had this problem with any of the other three dogs I trained. HELP! I am really at my wit's end

Oh, I forgot to add about Elliot's crate. She only has room to lie down in it. We put a box in the one upstairs and the divider in the one downstairs is practically touching her when she lies down so there isn't any extra room for her to potty except where she is laying.

Some are more stubborn than others. Magnus took maybe a month or two?.. Zoey... yeah... I think took over a year. I used different methods as well but Magnus just "got it" sooner. Being only 4 months is still really young so I don't think she's really all that out of the norm. Have you checked with the vet? See if there are any physical issues with her? I know you said you tried every method for "couple of weeks" but that might not be long enough for it to work. Instead of every hour, how about taking her out every 30 min? For the crate... have you tried playpen instead? Where you can leave a pee pad for her to potty? At least that way, she won't wet her bedding. Which.. is bit weird b/c usually they don't like to potty where they sleep. There are alot of members who's had same/similar issues so I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback. Good luck!

| She needs a limited amount of space like a play pen. When you know she has to go do not come inside until she goes and when she goes give her a treat and praise her. When you see her go inside tell her no. You just have to continue to do this.

Four months is very young. You have to just keep at it. It does get frustrating. She will backslide. I too cordoned off an area in the kitchen to limit his area. I got him at 5 months and I wouldn't say he was really trained until he was 7 months. Some go faster. I also include the major backward step he took. I had let him out of the kitchen and after a couple of weeks he started going inside again. I put him back into the kitchen, and he understood why and shaped up again really fast. Good luck. I would feel most frustrated when I heard about people who trained their dog in under a week! Hang in there!

oh, and he is 5 years old and to this day I praise him like crazy when he goes outside. As I tell my DH, I mean the praise sincerely, I am so grateful he goes outside! I think since she knows she has done something you don't like, she's halfway there. I had the distinct impression that Dinky did not like going outside during training.

Don't give up. Consistency and persistence is the key, it's only been a few months. Trust me they do catch on. It took my last Yorkie a full year to finally catch on. It was mostly my fault because I wasn't consistent and persistent. I would try a new method and when that didn't it work fast enough for me, I switched to another method. Does that sound familiar? if so. Find one method and stick with it. Don't constantly switch up. Once I stuck with it, she gradually begin to catch on until it was second nature for her. Whatever you do, try not to put unreasonable expectations on how long it should take for her to be potty trained. My current Yorkie caught on in only a few months. Every dog is different.
