YT 1000 Club Member | For Those Who Have Owned Other Breeds, Are You More Protective? I seem to be way more protective of Rasta(yorkie) than of our family English Bulldog. I am protective of Roxie, but she definitely gets to do certain things Rasta isn't. Roxie can stay outside and potty with me checking in on her every 10 mins, sniff around, not as worried of a stranger stealing her (she's 50+ lbs of muscle) even though bulldogs are sought after too. Rasta can do none of those things plus more. I don't let people pet him(I'm a germaphobe), he hardly ever goes outside and when he does it's always with me less than 5 ft away, etc. Sometimes I think I'm not allowing him to live his life to the fullest because I may be too protective. Anyone else feel this way? |

| I also own a larger dog and I don't worry about him out in the fenced in yard. But Bella is always with me. I am totally pee pad traing because I am afraid to let her go outside we also have Hawks and I don't want them getting her. This is my first yorkie and I also am very protective but I spend time with her in the house playing fetch and making training a game she seems quite content to sit with me and chew on something. If we're wromg inso much protection well I can't help it |

| Boy, I thought I was the only NUT......LOL, I am the same way with Zoey and sad to say maybe worse. I would never let her outside alone, she can't jump off furniture, I check all her toys constantly to make sure they have no strings, sharp edges, or anything she can choke on. I don't let strangers hold her, (sometimes they ask) I keep her in her play room when I am busy so she can't get into dangerous situations, I also keep a close eye on how much she eats and eliminates! Am I crazy or what!!!! I just love her soooo much . I have never been so bad with any other pet I have ever had. Oh well, I guess that's what happens when a Yorkie owns your heart......... |

| I have always had small breed babies, Poodles, mini Schnauzers last 35 years only yorkies, I have always been over protective with all of them, they must be with-in my sight at all times. The Poodles & Schnauzers never got into the mischief these lil yorkies do so I have always been extra cautious with them and watch them like a hawk, always getting into something lol. Any pup I had came with me where ever I went, vacations, boating, camping, holiday dinners, or just family / friends get togethers.

YT 1000 Club Member | I don't let my Yorkie outside alone, but then I don't let the 80 lb dog out alone either because we don't have a fence so they are on leashes. However, I love for people to pet and hold my Yorkie. He loves people and he adores the attention they give him. The big dog is stuck at the house all day but my Yorkie gets to go almost everywhere with me. I am protective when another dog comes around. We have a neighbor that has a huge lab that has attacked me on a few occasions. He claims that because it is a "service" dog it is friendly. That is not a friendly dog. He has an underground fence but he doesn't like to put the shock collar on the dog because it hurts him when he gets shocked by it. The dog comes into my yard and attacks me if I don't have my big dog with me. My big dog will defend me (he has done it a few times) when that dog tries to approach me so if my dog is with me that dog will not try to come near me anymore, but if I alone he will charge at me. So, when we walk by the neighbors house I have my big dog closest to his yard with my Yorkie between us and I am ready to scoop up the Yorkie. It is only 2 houses from mine so to go anywhere I have to walk by there. I am very protective of the Yorkie around that dog because I know what the dog can be like. I once came home and that dog was on MY front porch. I told it to go home and tried to go in the house and he charged at me growling. I went to my car and started to dial the police but before I could he ran home so I went in my house and called my husband who went down to the guys house after work to tell him to keep his dog on his property. We have leash laws in this town that dogs must be kept on a leash but because the guy is friends with the cops they don't enforce it. The mailman has to cross the street to get by his house if the dog is outside because it attacks him too. My dogs love the mailman and if we are outside the mailman will stop and pet both my dogs. My big dog is not socialized around other dogs enough, but I keep bringing dogs into my house to get him more socialized, but in public the big dog acts like an idiot and barks like crazy and scares the other dog. He is not like that in the house though. However, he is socialized with people and loves people even toddlers. I have had toddlers just about hanging on him and he is happy. So, except when another dog is involved I am not that over protective of my yorkie I guess. I would not let another dog near him and I would attack a dog that tried to hurt him. I have looked at that neighbors dog before and flat out told the dog that I would take him down if he tried to hurt us. I think he recognizes the tone in my voice that I am serious. I will stare right at him and dare him to bite me. He will eventually back down and look away. I just wish the neighbor would follow the laws and either tie him up or put his stupid shock collar on him so he can't get to the sidewalk and then wander wherever he wants to go. He pees on all our expensive plants and ruins them too, where I tell my dogs where they can pee.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | No I don't think I am over-protective of my Yorkie - but I do protect him - commiserate with his size. I protect my large breed too - differently in some ways.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | When I first got my puppy, I was crazy over protective. Now that she's a little bigger, I'm not quite as bad. As for bigger dogs, I had bigger dogs when I was a kid and they were allowed out in the yard unsupervised but I would never let Bonnie outside without me. I am also more wary of people who want to pet her or ask to hold her. The Miniature Pinschers I had, were not allowed out without me either, even though they were slightly larger than Bonnie is supposed to be. They seemed to be more wary of people than Bonnie is but that's probably just because she is still a puppy. |

| I think I have over sheltered lilah. I didn't mean to but she is so tiny and fragile and steal able and squish able. I think I over did it. She is great with people but I wish I had worked harder with her dog socialization. Admittedly, she hasn't been the same since a large dog attacked her while we walked (leashed definintely) along a path at a park (the other dog slipped his leash) but I think that although that experience was traumatic, it may not have been as impacting of we had more diverse positive experiences prior to that. Our dog buddy selection was too limited I think. Anyhow, o course I want to protect my sweet baby girl but I think we should be cautious as well of over protecting, that it benefits them to have reasonable amounts of time alone and to participate in (safe) typical dog things. Having my girl has been a great learning experience, I wish I had been a little less nerve wracked about everything (since I course she knows every time and becomes an anxious mess right along with me!).

| I am definitely more protective of Spice than any of my other larger dogs i had. My Sugar is a small JR terrier and weighs 13 lbs and I am still more protective of Spice. She is so tiny I feel everything can be a danger to her , she is never out of my eye site . I have stopped letting Sugar play with her as I felt she was too rough on little Spice. So you are not the only one! LOL |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Not even close! In my younger and more irresponsible days, I'd routinely let the big dogs roam the neighborhood. I think I stopped when my Lab got picked up three times in one year by animal control and it started to get expensive. This was 30 years ago, so don't bust my chops too much! I've never been tempted to do the same thing with little dogs. Too many things can hurt them.

| My German Shepherds were my partners and I loved and cared for them and made sure they wanted for nothing. With Piper...well, she's my little girl...tough, independent, demanding, cajoling, sweet, loving. She's also little, little, little...innocent, needs to be held, wants to be picked up...I am relentlessly protective of her! |

| I think I am to a certain extent but I'm one to always believe that she's still a dog, so I do let her act like one. Leash outdoors because he have hawks, I think is the only thing that scares me about having her compared to having a larger dog.

| I had a Shih Tzu and Japanese Spitz before and while I do protect all of them to some degree, I think I protect Pao, my current Yorkie the most just because he 'thinks' he is a big dog and will try to start a fight with bigger dogs. While he is a good 10 lbs, we had a hawk that swooped really low while we were on a walk a couple months ago and he does have Grade 2 luxating patella so I have to be careful with him to not let him jump down the couch too much so yes, I do protect my Yorkie a lot more than my other dogs. My Shih Tzu was very mellow and lazy and won't do much so the chances of him hurting himself is a lot less than my Yorkie! And I never leave him in the backyard by himself ever...even when he was with me, he managed to go harass a skunk and got himself in trouble!
