She's got me running in circles. Hi all. I'm looking for a little advice if you please. So we got our puppy February 4th. She's approximately 11 weeks now. She's a pleasure and I'm not frustrated in any way. I just want to make sure I'm not making things worse by trying to find whats best for her. When we brought her home we had her in a playpen with pee pad food and water and a bed. She would mostly go on the pad, but sometimes on the bed, or off the pad etc. Not a big deal to me as I wanted to pee pad train her and hated the idea of her having to hold her stuff at such a young age. My husband says why is she special? Our other dogs go outside and so should she. He didn't really like the idea of a dog pottying inside. I said, ok I get that, its your house too. I started taking her outside to do her thing and she seemed to like it, and take to it pretty well. She still had accidents in the house but thats to be expected. So we set up a crate for her. She doesn't seem to like to be in the crate at any point during the day if I'm around. She whines and won't nap. Overnight she does not whine and I wake up twice to take her out. She usually pees and poops but she still always manages to at least pee in her crate! She does not seem happy with being crated. So we've been doing this for two week now. I feel like she's regressing and just peeing in the crate all the time. Doesn't matter if I just took her out or if she's in there an hour or three. So today I set up her playpen again and she seems to resting comfortably in there in the middle of the day so I can get a little housework done. I do not keep her crated much at all during the day because I'm home why should I? I do need time to do things around my home so I do put her in there occasionally. I take her out to potty very frequently during the day and usually have here tethered in whatever room I'm in so I can watch her. So to make a super long story short my question is am I totally screwing her up by making all these changes trying to see what fits best? I plan on letting her live in her playpen at night for now. Would providing a pee pad at night totally ruin her outdoor training and confuse her? I read that you should not provide a pee pad while trying to outdoor train until they are solid on that. I don't know what else to do to keep her dry at night; other than getting up every hour. I've had to bathe her twice this week and I worry about dry skin. We are using Chris Christenson Happy Eyes 2in1 Shampoo. I just want her to be happy and for us to find balance. Any advice? P.S. I feed her three times a day 6:30, 11:30 and usually around 4 or 5pm.

YT 1000 Club Member | I just got my first Yorkie 6 weeks ago (he is 9 years old) and luckily he was house trained. He has been great and only had a couple accidents, mostly our fault for not responding to his needs. Having had other dogs in my life my first question is what type of crate do you have for the puppy? I have experienced with mine and other friend's or family member dogs that a lot of dogs do not like the plastic hard sided crates but are perfectly content in a wire crate where they can see everything still. I have a crate set up for my Yorkie but mostly it is the set up that is important for me. The Yorkie has to walk through the crate and then the other end opens up into a hallway that is blocked off by a baby gate to create a little corner where his food and water is. The reason for this is to keep our big dog out of the Yorkie's food and water because the big dog does not fit in the smaller crate to climb through it. The Yorkie took to this set up right from the get go and doesn't mind the rare occasion I put him in his crate (I also stay at home so why have him crated when I am home?). Mine is very quiet in his crate unless I have just come home and then he has to say his normal hello's! to me as he is just so excited I came back home (even if I was only gone 5 minutes). Good luck with the crate training. I am getting a half Yorkie puppy in a few months and I plan to set up a larger crate that has a portion of it with a pee pad so he can relieve himself if he just has to go while in the crate and then the other half with bedding where he can be comfy and sleep. The puppy won't be crated much because I will be home, but it will be crated several times a day to get it accustomed to being crated for it's own safety and well being. Once it is crate trained properly though I will have it out more.

I don't think so. When I brought home my first yorkie, I switched up quite a few times until we had a setup that worked for the both of us. Once we found the right setup, it was smooth sailing from then on when came to house training. I thought I would confuse her with changing up the routine but she would let me know that whatever I'm am doing isn't working and to figure something else out. I think a lot of people on here went through the same thing....trial and error.

Its a wire crate. Ive blocked off a portion of it to make it smaller. Thanks Yavenay that makes me feel better. Today in her playpen she has slept and relaxed like she hasn't since we started crate training. Plus no accidents so far.

Don't get discouraged! I was also afraid that my pup would go backwards during training. From 12 to 18 weeks old, he'd poop and pee in the crate almost every single night, and also during the day! We washed the poor pup so much he was getting dandruff! Then, all of a sudden, he started to get it. He hasn't pooped or peed in his crate during the day in two weeks, and he hasn't pooped or peed in the crate overnight in one week (he's almost 21 weeks old now). We've been set on outside training him since he was 13 weeks old, so basically, he's been learning to hold it! I'm a first time dog owner, so I don't have much advice to offer... Just be consistent and try not to get overwhelmed. It gets better. Last edited by Brianna; 03-02-2015 at 04:31 PM.

Last night she slept in her playpen and no accidents from 11-6 and so far today no accidents either. I guess she just really hates being crated.
